Well, they did get a key part of their World Series run.
I'd say it was worth it. ;)

And what the hell was La Russa thinking giving a free pass to Berkman *with two strikes on him*?!?!
I think this ranks right up there with the great blunders of all time. Kent's GOT to be a better hitter with a 0-0 count than Berkman with two strikes, doesn't he?! (He is. By over 70 points of average and 170 points of slugging.)
Plus, if you get Berkman, you can walk Kent *and pitch to the pitcher with two outs*! I thought I saw Isringhausen with a look of disgust or disbelief when he got the signal from the dugout.

Bad move, Tony - I thought so at the time, before Kent summarily ended things last night.

He failed.
;)

Again, seriously, I think this was a gross blunder. I don't like judging managerial moves by the end results, but if it had worked, we'd all be saying good things about Tony right now, so I guess he's got to take his lumps. Judging by the end result, it was TERRIBLE.

I'm SURE Isringhausen was dismayed by the call.

I know, first base is open, with the score tied, and one out in the ninth. I know, Berkman has been scalding the ball all series. I know, Kent hits into a lot of double plays. But, *he's got two strikes on Berkman*. It's not a full count, it's 2-2 - this is mostly a good pitchers' count - that is, most hitters hit well below their totals on this count, and Berkman is no exception. The way I look at it, you've finally got a decent chance to sit down their second best hitter, with their best hitter already aboard and away from the immediate danger of the batter's box. Why not take it, then face Kent, or, better yet, the pitcher, hopefully with two down?

I think Tony, who's usually a numbers freak, blew one.

I hope Im wrong but when the Redbirds hired Larussa i said they would never win a world series with him at the helm. After watching them this year i figured they could win in spite of him and lo and behold he fucks up again. I still have faith in my birds and i just hope tony doesnt have to use his brain the rest of this series.

Well, I think LaRussa's generally been a pretty decent coach - I'm not sure why you'd think that they couldn't win with him.
I do think he might have cost them last night, though.

In any case, Houston has to prove that they can win away from Juicy Juice. I'm not sure they can. Look for a Game Seven.

wanna blame anyone, blame isringhausen! how do you "groove" one to a notorious, free swinging, first-ball hacking hitter! jeff kent is not a "punch and judy" hitter either, the man has power. oh well, i guess larussa showed him no respect, and then his pitcher laid one in his wheel house. so much for reading the scouting report!

Plyrs99

you cant blame larussa anyways, the cards are just plain being beaten, by a team playing better! now we will see if playing for the home team advantage during the year really works. i hope we see a game 7, and roger clemens pitches! houston invested heavily in him, just for this very game!

well mr. rocket-man, let's see what you got now! this is the reason the 'stros got you for!

should be a very good game!

Plyrs99

garner is being second-guessed hugely tonite, for starting journeyman pete munro. if they lose tomorrow, i would not want to be in his shoes. i would have had roger in there tonite, with oswalt ready for game 7. you ride your big guns in these situations, and you give yourself the best chance to win, whenever you can. garner failed miserably in this regard.

You beg the question when you say "you give yourself the best chance to win".
Obviously, *Garner* thought "the best chance to win" was not with two guys going on short rest, possibly blowing out his bullpen in the first game and having nobody left for the second.
When are losing managers EVER not second-guessed?
I thought it was a fine call - having your big gun ready for Game Seven. Actually, he'll have BOTH big guns ready for Game Seven. Seems like a good arrangement to me. But, Clemens has got to start seven.
The real problem is that the 'Stros can't win away from Juicy Juice.
