+1 for Maker's. Great stuff. Have your tried Maker's 46 ? A little bit smoother and a little higher alchohol content. Very nice indeed.

I was recently given a bottle as a gift, having commented on my interest to try it and was underwhelmed. It not swish, but it didn't measure up to my expectations. Perhaps, in time, a few more cuddles will help.

I can't say I am a bourbon guy, but I do like to try new things. I have had Jim Beam and Old Crow (yeah cheap shit) many moons ago and have heard of Makers. A question, how do you enjoy bourbon, neat, ice mixed, I know this is personal preference, but what is the best way to enjoy it?

Much like Scotch, so choose your poison, any of the above. Have you ever heard of bourbon and branch? Plain water, but just a touch.

There isn't a "best way" other than not adding ginger ale. It is as you wrote personal preference.

Thanks br13. Is Makers a good one and where would J Beam fall on the scale of bourbons?
I'll let the real bourbon drinkers answer that one, as i've not had one recently. but JB in bar a with a buzz as a goal and sawdust on the floor, is not a bad fit.

A couple of years ago was on a bike trip down to New England area. Happened to find a bottle called 'Old Grand Dad' or something similar. According to the label it's the 'Original Bourbon in America' so at $12.99 for a 26er I just had to try it.

Put the bottle in the top-case on my motorcycle for a tryout after the day's ride. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the lid wasn't tight and the whole bottle emptied out onto the rest of my luggage including all my clothes. Horrible smelling stuff - can't imagine what it would have tasted like.

Drove straight home the next morning - funny how the cars kept moving out of my way!

Maker's Mark on the rocks. It's Martha Stewart's favourite bourbon too, btw.

For savouring it's Makers for me. For getting bent and generally over-indulging I go with the 'Jim'. Many years ago I was with a friend camping in backwoods Of Alabama and we met up with a bunch of crazy rednecks. One introduced himself as Bubba while swigging from a bottle of Jim Beam. Once I produced our bottle of Jim from the camping supplies and had a few mouthfuls we were one of the gang and got along like a house on fire. A great party.

So for me, while there are better brands, I credit Jim Beam with keeping giant rednecks by the name of bubba from committing gross indecencies upon my carcass a la Deliverance style.

I actually checked the guys drivers license later on and his name really was Bubba.... Got to love the deep south!

Were you going through hiss pockets while he lay propped up against a tree to notify his kin where to find him? Just joshin'.

Makers is excellent, but not the best. I prefer Knob Creek, and Woodfords Reserve. More recently picked up a bottle of Four Roses small batch. Really nice stuff, especially for the price.

I beg to differ. Woodford Reserve is turpentine imho.

An excellent bourbon, in my opinion, is Eagle Rare Single Barrel, aged 10 years. Not easy to find at LCBO but can be found south of the border.
