The bible is probably responsible for more good deeds and more terrible deeds than any other document in the history of mankind
If it makes people treat each other well I think it is a great book, if it is used to inspire hate and violence then it is the worse piece of fiction ever written

Fiction with pieces of history thrown in.

Some believe that religion is the root of all evil.
I believe that it generally causes way too much grief.

If we are to warship something make it life and this earth that we and our ancestors have brought to the brink of destruction.

I, too, am very concerned by the amount of ignorance masquerading as wisdom, and the volume of intolerance and hatred which has been expressed.

People who wouldn't think themselves qualified mathematicians or artists because they took one or two introductory classes in high school think they know what they're talking about because they sat in (and obviously didn't pay much attention to) a class or two on religion.

Thousands spend their whole lives studying the questions, and still don't get it right. Yet, millions don't study at all and think they know everything. Or simply choose to ignore what they have learned because it's convenient for them. Troubling, indeed.

To understand something takes a great deal of time and effort. To form an opinion about something takes neither.

Wow, I have to ask what the 11 (currently) people who believe that the bible is the literal word of god are doing on this board.

Maybe they're trying to save our poor damned souls.

More precisely it is going to make God of
the Bible Jehovah and/or his son who might or
might not be the same being angry. The
Hindu saviour Krishna hopefully wasn't offended.

And even if Jehovah/Yahweh/Jesus was aware
of terb activities I doubt they would hold themselves responsible for what was said in
the Bible. Take the four gospels, none of the authors ever
revealed their identities let alone telling how, where and
when they communicated with God. The apostle
Paul might believe that all scriptures were divinely inspired. But Paul himself had made
little effort to detail how he received his wisdom
from God. Unbelievers can rest assured that the
biblical authors had no more authority as God's
representatives on earth than the gentiles.

I’m not going to try to defend the bible. I’m just giving you something to think about.

Remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah? I’ve always thought that was a pile of crap. God rains down fire and brimstone on 2 cities because they are being wicked.

I was really surprised to learn that they recently discovered the ruins of these two cities. They were exactly where the bible says they were. They were under about 2 meters of ash and sulfur (brimstone) and they were destroyed about the same time the bible says they were.

I’m not saying the bible is true word for word but when I learned of the archeological evidence to support the story that I thought was fiction, I gained a little more respect for the bible.

Sorry...I'm calling bullshit on this one.

The apologists for the Bible make up shit like this all the time.

The only part I haven't seen in repectable publications is the two meters of ash and sulfur, I'm not saying it isn't true, merely that I haven't read it.

As for the rest that's rather like saying I find some detail of the Iliad not to be true, therefore Troy never existed.

Further that is the far edges of archæology in the Holy Land, most deals with a much later time period.

And the converse also applies, namely because some detail of biblical history is true, therefore the whole bible must be literal truth and prove god exists!...
