I have studied the Bible some, not a scholar but know more than a lot of so called Christains.

It's many differents books, combined into one. Filled with myths and lengends, and some history. Some taken from other cultures and older legends. That's mostly the Old testament.

The New Testament, except from the four gospels, is mostly Paul and his journeys and his view on Christainity! Jesus maybe the Lord, it's Paul writings and teachings that are the main influence in the New Testament!

This depends upon so many things. Are we discussing the Old Testament (Hebrew Scripture), the New Testament (Christian Scripture) or both?

What do you mean by true - history in a 19th through 21st century western sense, or conveying a larger truth of the interaction of the God with his people, or some admixture of the two?

Further, different statements may be true of different books of the bible.

So far, 80% believe its either mostly or entirely made up. My god, you are a bunch of evil heathens. You'll all burn in hell, I tell you.

Things were chaotic way back then. Society needed to keep order and try to explain the unexplained. History shows us how well this worked or didn't :)

When Jesus talked about hell fire I believe He meant to say it is those
who denied Him who will end in hell. The New Testament didn't even
exist in the lifetime of Jesus and the Bible canon wasn't finalized until
a few centuries later. For many centuries many people living in the
Christiandom would be lucky to have read any book let alone the Bible.
So be happy your salvation isn't contingent on you view on the scriptures.

Christendom saw the books on Greek Mythology and got jealous. So Christendom made up their own compilation and called it the bible....;)

It is kind of a dumb question and can't really be answered as posed.

The OT and NT are radically different.

There are parts of the bible that are law, some are revelation, some geneology, some history etc. It is impossible to lump them all together.

It would be perfectly normal to believe, for instance, that Pontius Pilot existed, but not to believe that Moses split the read sea. It would be perfectly rational to believe that the tribe of Israeli conquered Jericho but that the sun did not stand still and trumpets did not bring down the walls.

In fact, we can say with some strong certainty that the Epistle to the Hebrews is a forgery.

So really, the question as posed is impossible to answer for anyone who knows the first thing about the subject.

And anyone who says the Bible is entirely a work of fiction...is simply factually wrong.

Sure thing Woody...glad you are here to give us such powerful historical insights...

I guess the fact that there was no "Christendom" before they created their own "compilation" did not cross your mind.

The bible is proof that there are lots of brainwashed people in the world. If there ever was a Jesus or is a god, then there is a Santa, Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy.

Well put.

For instance does it substantially matter that 1 Peter and 2 Peter are almost certainly not the work of Saint Peter.

The bible is likely based on real characters in history, probably half true except for one important detail => There is no God.

There may be historical snippets here and there. But it is safer to assume all of it is fiction than anything else.

Then you can bring me an R8 for Christmas Santa. The vast majority of secular historians believe that Jesus existed as a historic person.

In fact the written historical record for the existence of Jesus is far superior to the written record for the existence of Alexander the Great. You do believe in Alexander the Great don't you?
