Depends on your budget and what you like or deem important in a winter jacket. But for the best "userbility and functionality", I like the ski jackets from Descente, Spyder, Arcteryx, Phenix, Solomon, Sherpa and the like. These jackets are designed for hours on the slopes so are lightweight, ultra warm, very maneuverable, uses either real down or high tech insulation, have fully taped seams, are waterproof and available in a wide range of colours, even very subdued greys and blacks so you don't stick out in the city. You can pick up one of these jackets for $700-1200.

Forget Canada Goose, they are heavy and more style than substance. And you will have the same jacket as every 3rd person in downtown TO. Don't even look at the Nikes, Columbias, entry level North Faces, etc.
If it is stylish and arctic weather warm like my MEC down parka, I would pay $1200.

Ski jackets in my experience aren't that warm, as skiing is an energy intensive sport. They tend to be lighter weight.

ski jackets are great if you're active as that's what they're made for, but standing around waiting for the bus or walking downtown into a wind, isn't quite the same. The makes you first mention are all good ones. Ski jackets tend to not have have hoods, so don't forget the togue.

My solomon jacket has a hood. I find it warm enough for me to brave the cold up in Barrie and further north.

Exactly. Big down parkas may be ugly, but I can wear a tshirt under my CG and stand outside for hours in -20* weather.

Have you considered Pajar coats? They make great boots. I didn't know they made coats and parkas until I saw one on a friend at lunch. It looked very well made and she said it was toasty warm.

I'm not sure about the racoon trim though. Those little bastards creep me out.

I bought a North Face a couple of years ago and it is great for anything you will get here in Toronto.
So far this year I have been able to get away with a demin jacket over a t-shirt. It is really all you need when going from house to car, car to store/work and back again.

I have various winter coats and jackets. I have a down-filled Nike winter jacket with a hood that I haven't worn yet. I also have corporate apparel from my employer that is lined and pretty warm but nothing's warmer than my 3/4 length parka which is similar to CG but a different brand name. I also have a Couloir ski jacket that I never wear (except in Utah once and up north a couple of times). Very warm. Can handle anything.

Bugatti of Germany makes outerwear using Outlast technology which was developed by Nasa. Works like a thermometer, by adjusting your body temp to the outdoor temp. Lightweight and stylish will never disappoint the ladies. Available at all better men's shops.
As it Bugatti cars??

If so, Bugatti is French (though owned by Volkswagen)

Is their Gotham Jacket entry level?
I'm planning on buying a North Face Gotham Jacket next week from SVP Sports. They have the cheepest price in the city (from what I know) $280.
I tried it on at Sportcheck and I love the fit but not their price $360.

Yeah, you're right about Canada Goose. Everybody and their uncle has one.lol

Between here and there.
Admittedly, I'm no "North Face brand expert". But from my experience with North Face, they seem to have quite an extensive range, from the entry level stuff found at Sportchek to what climbers wear in -40* C to summit Mt. Everest. A few years ago, I bought a NF winter jacket from Dick's Sporting Goods in the States for about $300 USD. It turned out to be a dud. This particular NF 3/4 length jacket didn't have taped seams, the insulation was crap and didn't hold in heat. I was always shivering with any slight breeze or in anything below -5* C temp. Last year, the SO bought me another North Face jacket (reg $600, bought on sale for $400), a supposedly higher end "Summit Series" that is visually better made than my earlier NF jacket, with taped seams, better quality stitching, better zippers and is overall "nicer". This new NF is actually lighter in weight but is much warmer, even in windy conditions. I am very impressed with the NF Summit Series line of jackets. As for the NF Gotham jacket, a quick look online shows it to be a quality product. I like it. In fact, many of the outdoor sporting goods review websites rate the NF Gotham jacket higher than the comparable Canada Goose Chilliwack jacket that costs $200 more.

I also have a Spyder jacket that is very lightweight and warm. BTW, this "ski" jacket comes with a removable hood (for whoever suggested that ski jackets don't have hoods....)

Agreed. The Summit Series their premier alpine line. It's solid stuff. I have a Summit shell (can't remember the model) that I bought six years ago. The taping around one of the pocket zippers came loose and the wrist enclosure strap got torn. I brought it back to Sporting Life, and they sent it back to NF. Repaired, no charge. Awesome.

The life time warranties from the better companies, like Eddie Bauer, Asteryx, and LL Bean is a good thing. I've return damaged items to each of these companies, two even after 4 years and they gave me a complete refund or replacement.
