tipping has gotten outta control. With min wage increase I found owners are just unloading on the patrons by raising the prices on the menu. With higher prices means larger tips since it's based on percentages. Use to be 15% was the expected rate but nowadays they're expecting more. Even take out places expect tips with tip jars and if paying by credit there's a prompt for tip. Tip percentage on machines calculated after tax rather than before tax.

I hate those machines who set it as 18% or even 20% as the min choices. It’s getting out of control.

Having said that, these day in Toronto pulling down 100K even after tax... is not much.

HAPPY NEW YEAR (year of the pig on the Chinese calendar) !

The young lady who served our table at our annual Christmas lunch said she is actually a struggling actress and is serving only to keep body and soul together between acting gigs. So, we gave her an extra big tip, plus it was Christmas.

She said she has some bit parts in movies, TV shows and TV commercials. No, we didn't ask her if she does nudity.

Yeah... I simply don't do it anymore. Prices for everything went up and when I noticed expect tips going up... I had to stop. I don't eat out enough where it makes a difference, but I simply Just pocket the money for myself.

Both my daughters waitressed, and my wife worked in the food service industry at both the management and ownership levels for over 25 years. Your a sucker and rube to tip(maybe 10% if your generous), and don't let anyone tell you any different.

I had no idea that waiters in Canada made standard minimum + tips. That's a pretty good gig.

Here
My son went to school for 3 years to get into a trade and worked part time as a server and made upwards of 800 a week. Now hes finished school with no debt and has gone to Europe for 3 months. when he gets back hes say hes going back to serving and going to do more traveling. He says he cant make that kind of money as an apprentice in his field or have the flexibility to come and go as he wants.

The 100K/ year sp is a more difficult grind, but is possible. They have a smaller clientele.

I can understand servers earning $100,000 a year in fine dining restaurants. But if you consider some of these low end buffet restaurants, it seems highly unlikely that that the tips will attract even 1/3 that amount. Most customers think that as they are serving themselves, then the tips should only be worth around 10% maximum. Many customers did not tip at all if they were ticked off with the service in these restaurants. Off course fast food servers make practically nothing in terms of tips.

I know that when my son worked at a restaurant, he made fairly decent tips as a waiter, but occasionally he had to work in the Takeout / Pickup Section, and he hated it as he made absolutely nothing from tips. At times some customers who paid by cash, and when the change from it amounted to a few pennies, that is all that the customer would drop into the "Tip Box".

$100k/year works out to $2k/week. An SP can make that in a day or two. Or more realistically a couple of clients per day over a 5 day period.

A few years ago I posted a fake female SP ad on backpage just to see what the response would be. Lots of bookings.

The fact that most women readily quit escorting (even though making money in it annihilates working a regular job) after a season or two is a testament to how much most SPs really do NOT like having sex with strange men.

Serving is great and you can make some good money at it especially now with the higher minimum wage. The issue is that for most people it is unrealistic to expect to do it for the rest of your life. Most people who stay in the industry for too long get jaded and hate doing it, especially if you are going to do it full time. Find a trade and serve part time for extra cash until you hate it and the people you are serving because it will happen.

I've tipped over $20 on a $5 meal, but it really depends on the server. I'm a complete sexist cad, my tip is based on how attractive and flirty the server is. The more cleavage, the higher the tip... that simple. I often ask if tips are pooled or go directly to the server. If tips are pooled I tip less.

Sexist and shallow? Absolutely agree. But I do it anyway.

Haha what?
Buffet restaurant is totally self serve why in the world would someone think they get a tip?
10% is way too much

Alcohol is the only thing a server ever brings (I am sure for legal reasons can't self serve the same way you do with things like pop)

Misleading article with no stats. But it's NP, so that should have bee expected.

I use the ten rule. $10 or 10%, whichever is lower.
If one would work out the details, try this out for size, as an example. The waiter works at an upscale steakhouse. The average bill would be $200 per table, a conservative estimate. Hence, the average tip at 15% would be $30. If the waiter handles an average of 12 tables a night, perhaps fewer on the weekdays and more on the weekends, he will receive $1800 in tips on an average 5 day week. His wages for 30 hours per week at $12.20 hourly would be $366. Hence total remuneration would be $2166 weekly. Over 50 weeks, this would be $108300.
