Texas Hold 'em

I'm not a gambler. But way back when all my pals were getting married, we had a lot of stag nights with strippers and cards...(Guess what I liked best?)

Anywho...I was stuck in a Hotel room recently, just channel surfing one night and I started watching some poker show.

Well the question is..why has Texas Hold 'em become "The Game"?

To me its no where as interesting as Baccarat..Chemin de Fer, or even Blackjack.
the only reason I can see the popularity is that Texas Hold 'em is easy to shoot for TV.

Oh..and Don't get me started on the silly clothes the "players" wear..!

Just watch the Card scene from Dr No., where bond meets Sylvia Trench..
That's a card game.

texas holdem has a couple of advantages,
1) it is familier to most of the american public
2) it is basically 7 card stud but the way its played you can have a lot of people at teh table.
3) The world series of poker uses it and has used it since binions started the tournement 25 odd years ago.
4) There is some suspence to the game and unlike blackjack and its derivatives you don`t get system players working it

Why do people play bingo. Beyond me

Holdem is a great skill game if you play in the right social environments. I have played black jack and it is just a 50-50 thing or slight edge to house. Boring to watch for sure.

Texas Hold'em is one of the few poker games where you can win with skill and cunning as opposed to just cards. Also, like many of the greatest games in the world, it is a few minutes to understand and a lifetime to master.

It's interesting that Mike Sexton is such a high profile poker commentator. I have seen him in several tournaments and he always makes bad plays IMAO.

The betting takes a lot of skill, but as someone who has played Holdem a fair bit,
I will take cards over "skill and cunning" any day.

The reason Hold em is so popular is because some brilliant person out there thought it would be a good idea to put little cameras in card tables to see the hole cards. Take this away and it is what it is: guys wearing hoodies and large sunglasses staring at each other.

True. For TV. What about when just playing cards with your buddies or at the casino?

Plus the little box with the estimated success percentage for each hand beside the hold cards.

Straight flush is better! Always!!

And the reason that you only see good Poker....or rather interesting hands..is that there is a lot of folding and weak pots that have been edited out for TV.

Trust me..you miss A TON of boring poker when you watch TV..you only see the interesting hands with key betting occurring.

POKER IS NOT LIKE THAT..There is a lot of boredom between hands!

I am now a top level player..about 2.4 times ABOVE a PROFESSIONAL LEVEL.

Ok honestly guys....baccarat, blackjack?? These are house games...you against the machine....you'll always lose in the long run! House always wins! Have you seen the casino revenue reports...lol. Poker is a game of skill and man against man. Good luck and Bad luck all cancel each other out in the long run and only skill and good play will determine one's success.

Yeah first post! Popped my cherry after 6 years!

The house wins

in poker as well Juicy.

Don;t forget they are always raking... Don't kid yourself. Poker does very well for a Casino...why do you think they dedicate so much floor space to it!!! And the good part..unlike other games....The CASINO IS NOT GAMBLING THEIR OWN MONEY......PEOPLE WALK IN AND JUST HAND THEM (rakes) every hand!!

The rake is necessary to cover their costs. They do provide a great venue to play the game. The rake is a minimal % of the pot that you only have to pay when you're fortunate enough to take down a pot! :D

1. The Casino is NEVER gambling their own money, in any game - they always win. It is other people's money they are staking with. Have you ever heard of a casino going bankrupt? Or losing?

2. The dedicate floor space to poker because of its popularity, not because of its profitability to the house. THINK....if they filled the poker room with slot machines, what would make them more money?

3. "Rake" is taken only at low limit games...most med/higher limit games require a "session fee", which has each player pay the house a flat rate every 30 minutes just to sit there (depending on the game stakes, anywhere from 5$-15$ every half hour).

You are about 2.4 times ABOVE a PROFESSIONAL LEVEL? Which WSOP or WPT or any events have you won? It's easy to place in the prize money. I do it pretty well everytime but placing 1st consistently is not easy. Navigating the many donkeys out there is very difficult. Patience is a virtue in NOLIMIT tournies.

It's impossible to put a value on how good you are at NoLimit Holdem since there are no seeds like tennis. You can't even use $ values because most Pros make more in cash games then tournies and those numbers are not tracked very accurately. I would say if you made in the 10s of millions you would be up there amongst the top pros, just as a guess.. Not sure there are too many multi-millionaires on terb.

And of course there are the many perks when your top pro such as appearances/sponsorships that will earn you more then what you make playing poker. As a 2.4X a pro I imagine you make millions there too since you so good and above pros.

Tee Hee.

I beg to differ.

In, for instance, Roulette, the Casino has to first take money in from customers, and then they pay it back out as the balls drops.

In Poker - The money just goes back and forth between players..and the casino charges a fee to move the chips back and forth!!
