They were going to cut him anyway, 5 sacks for 17 million won't do. This allowed him to save face and make it look like he asked for it. Not very durable and old.
He will sign for significantly less. People remember him for what he was in 2015 and earlier. Had one good year since then. He's a God in Houston especially after the floods.

Why didn't Houston try to work out a trade for him. At least get a draft choice.
The new team would have to take on the contract I believe. Nobody is going to pay him near that much so there would be no takers. He is probably going ring chasing for a much smaller salary, he may only have a year or 2 left if his skills continue to diminish.
He probably wants to be partying on a boat instead of watching gronkowski doing it almost every year.

I believe once you are released that gets any team off the hook from taking on his contact.
He will be a good situational player not an every down player.
With releasing him it takes 17.5MM off the cap.
I think it only counts 2MM of dead money now cus they reworked his signing bonus and stretched it out
Man..teams must have a gaggle of accountants to deal with the cap issues cus it went down to around 180MM for 2021
