Tesla model x or a Mclaren

What would you get?

I've been saving up for a Tesla model x and planned on getting at the end of this year. This would replace my SUV and become a work vehicle. I drive a lot about 5000 to 8000 km a month.

This year it looks like my income with be higher and my house price (which I'm selling) is up significantly so I should I have another $150k post tax. I've always wanted a Mclaren. Getting a P1 would be a dream, but I can't afford that! Likely, I would get a used Mclaren with 5k to 8k km. I was having a conversation with a friend who said I can't drive these vehicles long distances like I do normally with all my cars. The idea would be to keep my SUV with a Mclaren and hope to be under $300k.

Option 3, is to opt for a Model Y and invest the money instead.

I can't decide. I never splurge on myself ever. I worked really hard for the last 10 years with a lot of sacrifice including a marriage, social life and relationships.

What would you get?

New Model X or Model Y or slightly used Mclaren (most likely a 570 model).

feels like retail therapy to me. I love cars too and would have a Jay Leno size collection if I could BUT the way you painted that picture just doesn't seem right to me. Selling your house and put the equity in a depreciating asset just screams bad decision to me. Unless you have some terminal disease and don't have much time left I'd just finance the tesla, use it for work, and invest the equity in something else. That novelty will wear off quickly and then when maintenance is needed you will really feel it. Carbon ceramic brakes have been coming on super cars for at least a decade now. So a McLaren will likely be in for a $5k brake job. You'll get more out of a vacation somewhere than you will a brake job on your McLaren.

All just my opinion of course

I have driven a Tesla and there is nothing exciting about them. I would recommend the McLaren if you are treating yourself and I say go for it!!!

The McLaren is fun to drive... for a while. You will tire of it if it is your daily drive. And the maintenance will hurt if you even have to ask "how much".

But we all have to go through our supercar stage, so fill your boots!

And fwiw, the Tesla P90D is the most impressive street car I have ever driven.

The acceleration is unbelievable. I wasn't circumcised before I stomped on the accelerator!

If I were you, I will go for a 2019 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid which is only about $31,000 before taxes, delivery fees and some discount if you ask. Especially, when you drive a lot for work as you said between 5,000 and 8,000 km / month. The vehicle will wear out very quickly when you drive that much and the 2019 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid will give you very good peace of mind and is easier on your pocket book for the maintenance costs. Then you can put away the rest of your money $150,000 - $35,000 = $115,000 into perhaps an investment portfolio in blue chip stocks such as Google and Amazon which is almost guarantee will grow big over years.

it's sexy, futuristic look and feel, comfortable, faster (torque) than mclaren from 0 to 60km. for me, it be the model X. But again, if you like the sound of power and attention, go for the mclaren

Teslas are highly overrated. They are a two-trick pony (battery powered and instant massive torque) other than that they are overpriced IMHO. And if you bang one up have fun getting it repaired. Mclaren? OMFG yes please! But as others have mentioned maintenance is beaucoup bucks. Brakes shouldn't need to be done for a long time unless the car is being raced at a track. But when they do need to be done I'd be willing to bet it's about $3000+ per corner. Values for cars like a McLaren P1 are tricky to gauge. They usually increase. Look at a Ferrari Enzo for example.

But I would get a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS and call it a day. You can daily that thing all year round and have fun driving it in the summer. A base price of around $145K brand new and maintenance costs aren't quite as bad as the McLaren.

Edit, misread your post. The 570 is wicked too. Cars like that are even trickier to gauge value wise than a car like a P1 or an Enzo. And I am not sure about maintenance costs of the 570 vs my 911 suggestion.

911 Carrera 4 GTS is still my suggestion though :)

The answer to this is always just get a 911

They’re affordable, reliable when maintained. Daily drive-able, and honestly the performance is not far off from a mclaren

If you want to step down a little to save on maintenance

Get a corvette or a viper. Parts are cheap and the big ass motors run forever. You’ll be on a first name basis with your gas station clerk though like I am!


Mclarena and Lambos and Ponies are not meant to be driven much dude, they are more collector cars / race track cars

If you drive that much, the gas savings actually become significant. I think spending 5-8000km a month in a Mclaren will probabaly cause you physical injuries on the road. Maybe hold of for the Porsche Taycan? If you are buying about 1200 liters/M in gas your savings will be in the 1000/m range with electric but you will need an ecar with range. If you travel a lot of long dist then go Tesla P100 as their charging network is the best right now. the Euros will have 350 KW chargers but that is still a min 2 years away when they are widely avail.

driving 5k a month in a mclaren or any super car is literally impossible.

He said he would keep the SUV if he bought the mclaren

Investment portfolio is good. I'm good on the money front for now. I don't think the car will depreciate that much so I'm not worried.

You can rent exotics, and they're getting quite common.
Since there seems to be an abundance of wealth in Toronto the past decade,
do attractive females even glance at Ferrari/Lambo's anymore? or will a puppy do better.....

Can't afford P1 mate... I wish though! I'll post up whatever I get. Right now, I'm thinking it out again... My dick says Mclaren, my heart says Model x, my brain says model Y

What's the point of a car if you can't drive it the distance you want?
That's also what's fucking me up and holding me back. I want to drive this car everywhere. It's the same reason why I never got a hurrican... I heard it's uncomfortable for long distances.

Beware of Tesla's range in the winter. Make sure there's charging stations along your route. I'm sure the Model X will be better but cold temperatures has a major negative effect on range. For a daily driver, it's something to be aware of.

I don’t think the change is a “major negative effects” but that depends on many factors including when you purchased it and technology at the time and how you manage your car and charging during cold weather.

Also if you get a Cybertruck with a range of 800km and 0-60 in 2.9 secs this is not a problem. I don’t think it was out at the time of this thread was created however is in the same price range with the tri-motor extended range.

With their roadsters you get 992 km of range and 0-60 in 1.9sec.

They are also releasing new battery technology later this year that might help.
