They have had issues in the past with terrorism of one sort or another. There are large populations of muslims in their former satellite states.
Thank goodness this could never happen in Canada because Prime Minister Trudeau will keep us safe.

Russia has made many enemies lately, at the moment the list of suspects are many. Of course Daesh is the prime suspect.

There are large Muslim populations (majority) in Russia itself, like in Chechnya. They figure about 8000 of them joined ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Some have died, some are still there, and some have returned back to Russia. Russia faces a greater threat from radical islamists than most people realise. Iraq is only a day's drive away from the Caucasus region of Russia.
So it must be frustrating for Russia to accept that the US and some allies, including Saudi Arabia have been funding what they call 'moderate' terrorists as proxies in order to overthrow Assad, when the blowback will particularly affect Russia because of its proximity, and Europe.
Any possibility it could be Ukrainians? Doubt it could be Muslims because the usual suspects on the Board keep telling us they are all nice peaceful people.
Well, the fact that we don't have a brutal gangster strongman like Putin making enemies all over the world, helps keep us safe.
Nonsense... it is people like you who tell us they are all dangerous . It could be Chechans, Ukrainians or Isis, or a host of others who have a reason to hate Putin.
There is a large Muslim province north of the Caspian Sea called Tataristan, I'm sure they're not happy about how their brethren are being in Crimea. Russia has also split part of Moldova into a gangster state called Transnistria. Russia rules it in much the same manner as Kaliningrad - minus the German expulsions.
Tartars in the Volga River Basin are ethnically different from Crimean Tartars and heretofore there hasn't been any great connection between them.
The suspect as confirmed by both Russian and Kyrgyz sourcers is Akbarzhon Dzhalilov an ethnic Kyrgyz in his early twenties, born in Kyrgyzstan but a Russian national.
80% of the population of Kyrgyzstan is Muslim while 17% are Russian Orthodox.
