Twice a year full vehicle inspection(higher standards than Ontario safety certificates issued by class A licensed mechanical shops) , spot road inspections, spot MTO inspections, vehicles 5 year max, min 2 million liability commercial insurance, safety equipment, real criminal background checks, ETC.

Class A Mechanic shops mean nothing.

The fact of the matter is that just about every cab out there is a burnt out piece of shit car that should be pulled off the road and pancaked.

And a previous poster on this thread posted a link to the Toronto Star about how hundreds of cabbies have criminal records, drinking and driving, sexual assault, you name it.

Maybe Toronto doesn't limit the number of restaurants but, thank goodness, they do limit the number of food carts and where they can stand. Otherwise, there would be 10,000 food carts with at least 200 at Bay/King.

I think the biggest message is that until it is clear, it is best to stay clear. The insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay out the insurance. I recall an accident I had during a weekday, and the insurer's first question was "Were you out on business". Had I answered yes, I would void my insurance and not be covered. Another time, I had to validate my driver's license, as it was close to being expired. Had it been, I would not have been covered.

I also agree about Uber's insurance, but in things I have read, Uber seems only willing to cover your deduction. You will note on their website they tell you to check your own insurance. Additionally, they take you on as a contractor, so they alleviate themselves of covering you. To cover everyone, the rates would be astronomical, as they would have to base it on driver's with the worst record, unless of course they check everyone individually. You can get coverage for Uber through your own insurance, but as noted from an earlier post I understand it is probably $5k+ per year.

As far as your coverage per your p.s., I think you would have to have personal insurance that covers you in the event of an accident in someone else's car in the event they are uninsured. I may be wrong, but I don't think your car insurance would cover that. If it were, what would happen to people who don't have car insurance. Under normal circumstances, the driver's liability pays for that, and if the insurance is voided due to misuse (Uber, no licence etc), the driver personally becomes liable. Of course you would have to sue them personally - and I wish anyone luck with that one.

To be clear, I am on the fence re the service, and am going to avoid it until it is straightened up, plus hope I don't get into an accident with one of them on a fare. If they can straighten it out, it is fair game for all.

The articles claim that Uber has $5 million in SUPPLEMENTAL insurance.

If I was going to operate for Uber, I would demand a Certificate of Liability Insurance adding me as added insured, just to be sure.

As far as getting into an accident, nominal business mileage should be allowed. I will ask my insurer some day. I go to the bank, court, lawyer, clients for my boss, post office, and other errands but it's less than 25 % of my total mileage. I'm not in sales.

I wouldn't say that every cab is a burnt out piece of shit of a car.

But the drivers are arrogant and reckless, and think they own the goddam road.

Uber can offer lower price simply by not following the rules! And as other markets if the are asked to comply where it make it even 10 percent fair, the will operate illegally, and tie it up in the courts!
Just let uber drivers do that. Get rid of the bogus taxi licenses which serve only to create a fake monopoly.

At least be honest, and say you like the fact you save a few bucks, and the risks are not a concern to YOU, because it's all about you.

I use Uber all the time, they have fantastic customer service and absolutely I trust that the ratings customers give on every ride are used to weed out bad drivers and shitty cars.

Uber is not only a better price, it is a better service with a better product.

I've taken many taxi and Uber rides in many countries and in every case (except Germany, see above) the Uber car and experience is superior - not even close.

Here is where I think the line should be drawn: public safety. The current taxi regime is not about public safety, it is a bunch of stupid rules to create fake monopolies. The city shouldn't be doing that AT ALL.

The role of government should be to ensure that those who drive others have clean driving records, no history of serious or violent crime, and that their vehicle is safe and properly insured for its intended use.

That's it. Most of that could be done online in a nearly automated way for a small processing fee.

The current taxi regime is NOT like restaurant inspections. It is as if the city has said there can only be a hundred restaurants in Toronto and they could only serve burgers and the price had to be $29 per order.

The only problem I've had with Uber is that someone once got in the car I requested. I immediately texted the guy but he was being a bit of a dick. I contacted Uber and they replied within 10 minutes with an apology, saying they would discuss the situation with the driver and credited me for the trip I took the next driver.

The difference is Uber X drivers own their cars. Unlike regular taxis who might have 5 or 10 drivers who don't give a shit about them, because they don't own them!

If cabs are being regularly inspected by reputable mechanics, then how come most of them are complete and utter pieces of shit?

Answer - because cab companies do not want to spend the money to properly maintain their fleets and circumvent the rules.

A guy driving his own car will maintain the vehicle to a higher standard than any cab company save an except cabbies who us uber to find fares

Cab companies here have nothing to do with ownership of vehicles, fleets and single owner operators. Majority are now single owner operators. Inspections are conducted by the city, not local shops where they might let things slid.

So you were saying, oh ya no clue!

Dairy is not subsidized, and milk produced here is tested at least 3 times before it gets to the public. Btw, dairy farmers are not protected either.

Growth hormones cannot be used in Canada, but it can in the US......I would rather clean milk without hormones.
