No one in the press seems to broach this uncomfortable truth. Even if Trump does not go ahead with this 25% tariff (I believe he will) or if its is quickly resolved, its goals have already been met. Anyone who was thinking of investing in Canada, even Canadian companies are now probably changing their plans. How can you really make any long term investment when the terms of trade can be changed on a whiim. Any trade agreement is useless and the dispute resolution process is far to slow to be relevant to any business. Canada needs to come up with a new plan or get annexed. Its not really tenable to rely on FTAs. Maybe we join the SCO and BNR? In anycase, its time to admit the fact that the USA has no friends, just interests. In the future it will be increasingly difficult to keep our interests aligned without affecting trade.

Canada will not get annexed -- there's 0% chance of that. We need to stop allowing ourselves to get trolled about this bullshit. There are only two ways for the US go "annexing" Canada:

1. Through warfare; essentially, doing what Hitler did to Poland in 1939.
2. Through Canada willfully giving up her sovereignty

Option Number 1 will not happen, because the US launching an offensive against Canada would ignite WW3 -- all NATO countries would come to our side to stem the problem at the source and prevent it from spreading. Also, the leader of the US military, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, answers firstly to international law. If Trump told him to "invade Canada!!" the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff would tell Trump to fuck off.

Option Number 2 also will not happen because it's most only some angry Alberta shitheads who fancy the idea of Canadians becoming Americans. According to Section 41 of Canada's constitution, dissolving the country would require the passing of a plebiscite, a unanimous Yes vote from all 10 provincial legislatures and a unanimous Yes vote in the House of Commons. A snowball's chance in hell of that ever happening.

There is some fear.
But what long lasting damage has been done?
I have not seen any announcements of any changes due to these threats.
Also we do have the option to respond.

Oh come on man, all the USA needs to do is cause a major depression in Canada, collapse the CAD and people will vote to join the USA.

If you were looking to make a major investment to serve the MCUSA market, where would you make it? Assuming you desire to have access to the US market and it does not involved resource extraction. ?

do you mean proper boarder control by Canada which should have been in place to begin with?
So far all we have heard is politician's commitments, which should be a good start
But then Canada had previously made commitments to increase military spend and build up our Armed Forces capabilities , firm commitments, until Trudeau reneged and sent huge $$ overseas on his pet projects

Anyone who was thinking of investing in Canada, even Canadian companies are now probably changing their plans.
That already happened because of Trudeau

How can you really make any long term investment when the terms of trade can be changed on a whiim.
How can you really make any long term investment when the Prime minister spends and borrows irresponsibly and actively and intentionally destroys a very important economic sector in a heavily resourced based Country ?
Intelligent Money steers clear of stupid.

Any trade agreement is useless and the dispute resolution process is far to slow to be relevant to any business.
The economic reality will sort this out, we will get hurt no doubt, however it wont be painless for the US

Canada needs to come up with a new plan or get annexed.
Annexation is out of the question.

a new plan ?

1.Well lets not ever elect a Trudeau again to star with
2. The socialist experiment has left us quite vulnerable at a very bad time , so lets plan not to ever go down that road again

The economic reality will sort this out,
Tariffs taxes like carbon taxes are inflationary.
inflation is kryptonite for any political leader >>> ask your fan boy hero Trudeau. Well... maybe not ..... you do want an honest and sincere reply

under Trump ?
No way, a Canadian majority will never agree to that and the hurdle rate would need to greatly exceed 51%
Albertans wont either as long as they get a better deal from the Federal govt , Trudeau resigning will be taken by them as a good start down that road
D. Smith has a short list of asks, all reasonable and no Fed $ hand out required

you get pissed when shown to be wrong and then you just blither without thinking... slow down and try thinking

Trudeau left a mess.

Hard disagree. If there's one thing that unites us, it's hating the Americans.
wrong
the vast majority do not hate American, we just prefer not to be Americans,
a huge difference

your judgment calls on whole populations seem to be based on hatred

There are too many factors in that decision making and tariffs are but just one of the factors.

And why would we just sit and watch the USA do that?
We will invest elsewhere.
If the USA causes major depression in Canada, Canadians will turn against the US.
Not vote to join them.

If they wanna do it they will do it. Ultimately we are in the same position as Ukraine and hopefully a lot smarter

They wont even have public support from their own people to do all that.
There is no realistic scenario where the US invades Canada and manages to hold it.
They couldn't do that in Afghanistan.
It is not happening here.

if Alberta leaves, yes
Its well past the time for Ottawa to stop trying to destroy their economy

Do you get it now ?
Trudeau created a really big mess.
Hopefully we can recover from him

His number one responsibility as PM was to hold the country together.

Name one nation that is wealthy that has no significant elements of "socialism" in its economy and politics.

you asked a question about choices for an investment
its not my fault you did not like the answer , even though it was obvious you would have stated the US as well.

It all started with NAFTA and that was Mulroney. Once that was in place the die was cast.
