Taking your hockey just a little too seriously?

Father shook daughter's face mask at game

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TORONTO -- A father who allegedly grabbed his 10-year-old daughter by the face mask and shook it at a youth hockey game has been charged with assault, police said Wednesday.

The identity of the man and his daughter cannot be made public because of the daughter's age.

"The allegation is that a gentlemen grabbed one of the hockey players by the face mask as they left the ice rink and started shaking, yelling and screaming at the 10-year-old," police Sgt. Paul Malik said.

Coaches of the girl's team intervened Saturday and someone dialed 911 to bring the police, who arrested the 38-year-old father on one count of assault, Malik said.

The girl required no medical treatment, but "she was shaken up quite visibly," according to Malik. He said the father was released on condition he will return for an Oct. 14 court appearance.

The family moved to the Toronto area from California earlier this year, Malik said, and the father has gone to live in Michigan after the arrest.

Last year, Hockey Canada launched a public campaign called "Relax, It's Only a Game" that focused on educating parents who had trouble controlling their emotions at youth hockey games.

Any spin to this story? Seems that perhaps someone overreacted unless he was physically beating his kid.

Read the link. It says, "The allegation is that a gentlemen grabbed one of the hockey players by the face mask as they left the ice rink and started shaking, yelling and screaming at the 10-year-old," police Sgt. Paul Malik said.

All she did was miss an opportunity to score on an open net.

Hardly seems like an over reaction to me. I'd like to see more of these over zealous parents banned from the arenas. Freaks.

[And your link gave me an annoying pop up.]

These types of "incidents" aren't just confined to hockey. It's become an epidemic in many sporting circles. Parents have in many cases gone too far. Does anyone remember the hockey parent that ended up killing the hockey coach in the U.S. about two years ago?

I agree about the overreaction, but arresting him and charging him with assault? That's the part that surprised me a bit.

Sorry about the pop-up, I didnt put it there.

Maybe it's me, but anyone heard of "shaken baby syndrome"? Couldn't a ten year old be violently injured by this jack ass's actions?

I'm fine letting him be an example to these freaky parents to learn to keep control of their tempers.

I generally feel that those parents who are "hockey" parents and the like - generally live vicariously through their kids - probably to help cover some shortcommings of their own.

To me, I think about the tough guy who picks on his 10 year-old - try that type of attitude with someone his own size in a bar - he'd end up picking up his teeth with broken fingers.

They make me want to retch.

Fine, I'll say it out loud then...

This father who assaulted his daughter is a lousy no-good farking pathetic puke-stained donkey-felching wanker who obviously has a 2 inch penis.

HoldenMagroin: Just because I jest, doesn't mean I support the guy. Get a sense of humour.

Cripes.

The Globe and Mail crossed the line

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030918.uhockdad0918/BNPrint/National/

I thought the Globe crossed the line this morning. I didn't think they were supposed to identify the name of assaulted children. And of course the ten year old would say it wasn't a problem for her. Is she going to complain about her Dad to a reporter? Unlikely. And of course the grandfather said it was just jealous parents overreacting to his the incident. It would be a shame if she doesn't play anymore. Apparently she was quite talented.
