as stated in the article: six months since its outbreak and 2200 people have died. that's sad, but hardly something to warrant all the press its getting, IMO.

Want to protect yourself from swine flu? Go get a tan at a tanning salon. The vitamin d produced by tanning beds and the sun is shown to have an insulating effect against it.Canada is currently doing a study on this. But viroligist already know that the flu is prone to attacking those with low vitamin d in their bloodstream.

So you will not only look better for your fave sp,you will be healthier.

There is also a great story on thenaturalnews.com as to how there is a bill being passed in massachusettes that says that martial law will be comming in if the swine flu happens.Real nasty rules.Big pharm company's will be isolated from lawsuits and blame for any negative reactions that occur as a result of the untested vaccine. 1000 $ per day fines will be implemented along with arrest for those who resist, they can legally burn your house to the ground with no compensation or recourse on your part.

Sorry,I'm dated pre computer age ,so I don't know how to post a direct link.
Real scary stuff. So go get a tan.

I hope you're right Maya. This influenza (H1NI) concerns me.

It's similar to the Spanish Influenza that broke out during the spring of 1917. Governments and the general population weren't all that worried. It seemed pretty weak and the fatality rates were low.

Later that year during the fall/winter it returned and was responsible for between 20-100 million deaths worldwide.

Yes, we know much more in 09 than the medical authorities knew in 1917, but we still have much to learn about viruses such as this....

that's pretty disturbing.

has anyone read this book ?

http://www.amazon.com/Coming-Plague-Emerging-Diseases-Balance/dp/0140250913

makes you not want to even leave the house.

I do believe our species is in for a massive drop in numbers.
At least someone is smart enough to know better about giving out an untested vaccine without knowing side effects and if it is enough to do the trick etc...

from the article... Even if this was an unprecedented effort, and authorities were speeding up procedures for getting vaccines to the market, there should be no question of compromises on their safety and effectiveness, Chan said.

You are quite right Maya. The seasonal flu in a period from October to May typically kills 3,000 in Canada and 25 to 30,000 in the US. And this is with vaccines generally available. The 2,200 worldwide swine flu deaths over the same period seems tiny in comparison.

The danger is mutation at some future date and making sure the at risk groups get access to vaccines.

WHO thrives on creating publicity. Case in point was Avian flu.

I have thought about it too. I spend a fair amount of time at the Fallsview and Niagara Casino and wondering if I shouldn't avoid it til we get a handle on it. Casino people are disgusting pretty much. Don't wash hands, sneeze without covering and those fucking germ ridden chips are nothing to ignore.

The swine flu is an extremely important virus for those that study the spread of disease and try to figure out how do deal with a plague.

It is not really a very scary bug and there is a lot of hype over it.

Wash your hands/face, keep your hands away from your face, always wash after using the john (including going pee), before meals etc. Eat a healthy diet, exercise.

I was watching a Barney Miller episode (1976) the other day and they mentioned swine flu a couple of times. Evidently it didn't amount to much back then as I don't recall any widespread devastation. Is this one any different?

Want a nighmare scenario?

Swine flu: low pathogenicity, high infectivity.
Avian flu: High pathogenicity, low infectivity.

Both are still out there. Flu viruses love to mutate and combine with each other.

If they do combine, what could the result be..... worst case a highly infective flu virus with a 65% kill rate.

Flu viruses are generally most viral for those who are very young or very old. What is different about this flu virus is that it mimicks the virus that became a pandemic in 1919. It tends to strike hardest at people who are the most fit because their immune systems go into hyper-drive once infected until the body is worn out. It's more likely that this virus will burn out on it's own, but there's no way of knowing.
