Hey everyone,

I broke my 6 year old sunglasses yesterday, which unfortunately cannot be repaired. I went shopping for a new pair today and was inundated by all the different brands, lenses, frames and especially prices. Can anyone suggest what to look for, and what I should pay to get something decent.

Thanks in advance!

I've gone through enough sunglasses now to realize that they're a disposable good, IMHO.

My recommendation would be to forget the expensive brand name kinds. Just get the cheapest pair of sunglasses you can find at the drugstore, etc. I bought my last pair at the aiport for $20, and you can get them even less at drugstores and at the dollar store. When they break, and eventually they will, it will be painless. Just go to the dollar store and get another pair. If you buy the expensive kind (over $50) and they break, then you'll be pretty upset and you'll have to shell out another significant amount for another pair.

If you have a big wide face, it's useful to get the kind with flexible hinges, as the hinge is the weakest point, the thing that breaks first. I've found that Foster Grant has a lot of these, and Foster Grants can be gotten for $20 or less at drugstores, the airport, etc.

Well, not to get into a tiff over it but I would avoid the cheapo sunglasses like the plague. Why? Well, let's see....the lens' are not optically correct and the UV coatings are for shit (the dark lens' make your pupils dialate then allow UV rays in).

I only ever buy serengetti drivers, Bolle or Ray ban. You can get all these brands for between $100.00 and $200.00 a pair. A good place is at the sunglass hut at Dixie Value Mall. They are about 30% cheaper than anywhere else. Or you can try Ebay if you're not in a hurry.

Before accepting anyone's word on what you should buy, pick up a pair of the cheap ones. Then go look at the real ones and do a side by side comparison. If they will let you, take them outside when it is sunny and you will see the difference between a POS pair and a real pair.

I'm and Oakly supporter. I love their brand of eyeware. They are a little pricey but the results are great.
Ray Ban's are also polarized, come with a warranty and can come in many different styles/sizes.

I bought a pair for someone recently, and after the extra $ for the warranty and a case, with tax cost over $300.

Well, for prescription sunglasses, yeah, I'd say get some good expensive ones, making sure that they're durable and will last the contant movement of the face.

But if the eye doctor says you don't need any special sunglasses and you're already wearing contacts, then the cheap pair will do.

Sorry Balt, I don't "buy" it. I don't see how a pair of sunglasses costing $5.00 can be of the same optical quality as a pair costing over $100.00.

Believe me, I used to wear el cheapos until I saw the results of wearing serengetti's or Bolle. Not only are straight lines straight, but there is less distortion, I don't get headaches, and they are somewhat easier on the eyes.

Now if you break them or lose them every week, then don't spend the money, I agree a cheap pair are for you. But if you can hang on to them for 6 yrs, then they are worth the investment.

BTW: I have a pair of bolle now. Just this week I was driving up hwy 11 and we had a MAJOR downpour. It had been bright and sunny not 2 minutes earlier and I still had my shades on. I took them off thinking this would be better. NOT. The shades actually helped me see through the haze and spray from the road. I tried this with my bud's cheap pair and all they did was make everything darker....try it sometime......

Serengetti Drivers

I've been buying Serengetti Drivers since they came on the market 10-15 years ago. By far the best sunglass brand I've ever owned. Now depending on you the colour of your eyes you can wear green, grey, rose or brown/gold tinted lenses from different manfactures. Because I have blue eyes only Serengetti Drives will do with me, they have a kind of gold tint to the lens that makes bright light outside look clear and crips. The techonolgy in the lens is the same used in the buble canopies of F16 jets and the outer lens shield used in astronaught helmets. It what it was originally developed for.

Put it this way, they are not designer glasses that you are just paying for a name on the frame, you are paying for the best optical quality glasses around. Period.

I've tried 'em all and MJ's seem to be the best for all driving conditions. Best to get the glass lenses though.

I used to spend a hell of a lot of time driving and my dash board is usually scattered with papers, parking tickets, etc. Used to drive me nuts on sunny days as the glare and reflection of my dash was rather distracting. MJ's solved that prob in a jiffy. I've never come across any other brand that did that as well as Maui Jim's.

They're a bit pricey but worth it.

If you do a lot of driving, invest in a pair of serengetti as tboy and Winterhawk. It's the preferred lense by pro drivers. I usually do 7-10 hrs straight driving, it makes a world of difference as you eyes are tired from the Sun or switching between Rays and clouds. My eyes also get light sensitive.
I tried on serengetti and loved it but have to wait for med coverage due as few serengetti authorized to do perscription and so pricey. With my Raybans its not where as superior as my co-driver's serengetti from our long road trip. Gold and green are my preferred as winterhawk suggested enhance the Red and Green plus clarity, filters out the visual noise, even on cloudy days.

If you are looking for high end, try buying at your local Optometrists office. They charge a dispensing fee but have to sell at wholesale prices.

I go to Greenfield Eye Clinic. It's a small Optometrists office located 1 block north of Yonge and Sheppard. (20 Greenfield Ave) They carry most of the designer brands and can order in ones they don't have in stock.

It might be a good idea to shop around first and see which brand and model number you like in case they have to order it for you. Don't forget to compare prices.

I saved about $150 on a pair of Gucci Sunglasses last year.

Since your old pair lasted for 6 years, (and you take good care of them) then I suggest you invest in a designer pair.

Oakleys, Maui Jims are all good. Recommend that you get the polarized version.
They come in flashy styles, as well as 'normal-trendy' frames that don't go out of style. For example: Oakley Square-Wires.

If you plan on getting designer sunglasses prescribed, its best that you have them done by the optomotrist that sells frames.
