What More Can Vancouver Possibly Offer?

As of yesterday, Mats Sundin was reported to be in Sweden still mulling the two-year US$20 Million Offer that was tendered to him by the Vancouver Canucks shortly after the free-agent season began on July 1.

The Vancouver Province newspaper went around town to find businesses that would be more than willing to sweeten the pot being offered to him.

Maybe more ABBA on the air if Sundin chooses Vancouver: http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/sports/story.html?id=ebe4954e-15a8-4fa2-a19c-f42723e939cc&p=1

That was a funny article:) . In all seriousness, Isn't Sundin ruining his great legacy by being so arrogant and nonchalant about making up his mind? As a diehard Leaf fan I really hope that Sundin doesn't resign with the Leafs! He's become IMHO way too arrogant. Let Vancouver sign him already. The free Swedish meatballs may be the determining factor---lol.

Um, err, what legacy exactly is he ruining. He has never been on a winning team and ya, he has been the best of a sorrry lot....is that the legacy that you are worried that he is ruining. I say...what the hay.....go ahead and put it on the line Matts because that and a tonnie will get you a subway ticket home.

I agree...he could be a sterotype whore and play wherever paid him the most, whether it be Columbus or Detroit.

He is very unique in that he is actually conflicted about leaving a place that has been his home for so many years where the entire city took him in....realizes he makes more in a single year than any normal person needs to retire, is happy with his life......

For some, money isnt everything. he is looking at things from a much more Global view.

If anything, sign with the leafs and if the season turns out as expected, near the bottom of the east... then he should cross the line and become a rental player at trade deadline. I know, it's not in his nature, but either is winning a stanley cup at so far in his career.

Why don't the Leafs just part ways with Sundin right now? They could use the $7 million to get some more young players. The Leafs are going nowhere fast anyway. They might as well start building for the future. No time like the present:) .

Why just because their is a salary cap limit do you all want the Leafs to reach it .... To spend 7 million for the sake of spending money doesn't make sense ... Your just going to be locked into another contract for the new GM ....
Fair enough:) . Let the Leafs keep the $7 million and at the same time don't re-sign Sundin!

True enough.

The Leafs do not have to spend the remainder of the cap space they have left but MLSE is already making enough money out of them that they should be putting a decent product on the ice.

Hey, why not give the fans a free exhibition game that's not even on the schedule?

Nice gesture but I wish they would come out and say "We are rebuilding and we are reducing ticket prices for the upcoming year." I am sure people will be more trusting and happy about their so-called honesty and integrity.

I forgot. Most of us live in the GTA and will pay almost anything to go to Leafs games. How about the fans boycotting one of the games? I think that would be a bit of a reality check for the organization wouldn't you think?

Personally, I refuse to go to the games and give them my money until they try and put a product on the ice that I can actually respect and say "This is a solid hockey team."

Of note: Toronto's attendance was %103.4 to capacity this year.

Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen from Detroit are also UFA's for next year.

I believe the Sedin twins are UFA's next year as well.

Having Zetterberg on the Leafs would be a dream. We all can dream can't we? Franzen is a very gifted player as well.

The Sedins have played better as their careers progressed and have turned out to be pretty solid hockey players.

There will not be very much in terms of cap space opening up for next year but is they can possibly get rid of McCabe, that will help greatly in their pursuit of free agents.

I would keep the rest of their defencemen. Kubina is a pretty solid defenceman and Kaberle is steady and being paid a reasonable amount as compared to other defencemen.

The way Mike Gillis is talking, he sounds more like an agent (he was) than a general manager.

The way he is going about this Sundin is tiresome.

I don't hear Bob Gainey or Cliff Fletcher going on about it like he does.

He says that Sundin coming to Vancouver would be great, we gave him the best offer, play with the Sedin twins and with the Olympics in 2010, Sundin will probably be captain of the national team in the city of his NHL club.

Can you imagine if Sundin doesn't sign with Vancouver? It will make Gillis look like an idiot. He can offer whatever he wants but afterwards he should shut up and walk away.

I am sure he wanted to see what kind of offers there were available to him but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he signs with the Leafs.

woot?

www.habsinsideout.com

Reports look favourable to the Habs signing Sundin...
Personally.. I am not a Leafs fan (hardcore habs fan) but the Habs are outta UFA options so I am thinking (despite myself) that Sundin would be a good choice.

Sundin's Choice is pretty much this:
Vancouver = $$ cha ching
Montreal = Chance at winning the Stanley
Toronto= To remain a loyal loser.

Go Habs! :p

hehe

geeze...
next time I will keep to my Brangelina gossip :p

Tough Crowd I guess.. I should have expected the such from a TO audience

In ANY case, I am REALISTIC enough to KNOW that .. (and well Sundin.. as well.. if he is reasonable.. who knows) anyway.. to know .. KNOW.. that the Leafs (barring a miracle) will NOT be getting the Stanley Cup this year (only in the Love Guru can miracles like that happen boys.. hehe)

And.. if y'all are reasonable too.. you will see that Habs DEF have a better chance..

Though.. I mean seriously.. wouldn't it be the most painful irony (to a habs fan) should the Leafs win their first stanley in like CENTURIES.. during Mtl's centennial year... ouf tabarnacle.. that would be quite painful..

I bleed Bleu Blanc et Rouge ; )

well.. at least now I will know who you are :p

haha. do send me some Leafs players too.. haha I will rub and tug .. them .. right into golf season again .. tee hee

this convo is getting too steamy.. and off topic.. behave would ya ! ; )

Back to business..
Actually.. I am kinda curious.. from the standpoint of a Leaf fan.. after Sundin waived his no trade clause.. and now TO might lose him with the potential to not have anything in return.. does that piss anyone off?
Personally, it would have me rip roaring at the idea.. granted.. Leafs managers give these no trade clauses like crazy..
je ne comprends pas du tout les gars : (
