Well I had to prove it wasn't rollie either :D
I'm sure Roland had a similar incident happen to him. Come to think of it I believe he was with Montreal at the time.

I don't know about Shiek, but it's right up there on mine with BJ salming and Brian Savage.

Perhaps a new thread...Worst sports injuries. Thiesman would need to be on that list.

This is going back awhile early 1980's, I believe that a LA Kings player ( Charlie Simmer maybe ) while playing a game in Toronto broke his leg similar to what happened to Thiesman. I can still see him crumpled in the corner with his leg behind him.

Does anyone remember who it might have been?

A hockey stick floated up the stands would have to hit someone pretty precisely to do any real damage. Face shot would likely be it, since its a winter sport, and most fans have long sleeves or even a jacket on.

On the other hand, a foul ball from baseball, travelling at 100mph+, could kill someone. But no one gets suspended for that!

We are dealing with two different acts here. One which is part of the game ( foul ball or deflected puck ) to an deliberate act which the player had a choice.

Sundin choose to throw his stick over the glass in a deliberate act, one for which the legal speil on the back of the ticket would not have prevented him or the team from getting sued if someone had in fact gotten hurt!

However its interesting to note the the 5 longest suspensions ever levelled happened after the helmets became mandatory in '93. Most of these suspensions happened because of sticks to the head or elbow's to the head. (McSorely and Domi)
I love the quote Sheik. I think a helmet might have helped there.

Isn't '93 about the same time that little marketing natzi (Bettman) took over the league and decided that in order to sell hockey to the peace-loving pacificsts south of the boarder it needed to be less violent? He takes a similar mindset to the pro-capital punishment people in that the consequences need to be sufficiently punative to deter the action in the first place. Like that works.

I think all of those lengthy suspensions have been under his watch.

I remember when Wilf Paiement, after being speared, smashed Dennis Polonich's face with his stick. He got 15 games for it.
As I recall, there was even a criminal investigation (no charges laid), and Polonich was never the same after the incident.
He did win a few bucks in a civil suit.

I remember Wilffy, but who the f**k was Dennis Polonich? He may not have been the same after it, but what was he before the incident?

Charlie Simmer ended up doing OK for himself. I believe he married the 1977 Playboy Playmate of the Year and now he's doing radio for Phoenix Coyotes games.

Didn't Ron Dugay end up marrying a Playboy Playmate also?
