Under normal driving conditions, standard. At traffic jams, definitelly automatic.
I agree, and also(although it's never happened to me) when your battery dies with no cables, at least you can still get it started.

I've driven standard for the last 20 years.

I've got a standard but never again. It makes it nearly impossible to jerk off in traffic.:D

Definitely standard. However, sadly, the stick shift seems to be disappearing from new models. Some manufacturers are opting out from putting in a stick shift and just go with the (lazy) masses and only put in an automatic or automatic/flappy paddle shifter combo (which is still pretty much an automatic).

I think with the demand for more efficient hybrid and non-hybrid cars you'll see the manual transmission offered less and less. Not to insult the stick shift fans here but no matter how good you think you are an automatic can shift more efficiently than any human for normal driving and in particular with hybrid cars that are combining power from multiple inputs.

I know that on paper a manual transmission has better fuel mileage but in the real world people with manual transmissions have a tendancy to rev the engine at stop lights and shift at less than optimal times for the "fun factor". That's just human nature but it eats up the fuel efficiency advantage manual has over the automatic.

Actually, if your battery is stone dead, you can not start it anyway, anyhow.

No battery = no power = no spark = no go.

As to which I prefer.....

My toy car is standard. My day to day drive is Automatic. Works well for me.

Automatic.

Try driving a standard in stop and go traffic on a hill, you have to work the clutch overtime being careful that you don't stall or roll into someone. How is that more control?

I thought you could push start a "manual". The movement gets the alternator working which creates the "spark". I could be wrong on that but that was my understanding.

Automatic but with a high stall converter.

I like keeping my left foot ready to brake if needed.

If I had 3 feet then maybe a stick but a H.P. auto trans is faster. No wasting time to shift.

Now on street cars from the factory, a stick is faster but on the drag strip all you find is auto trans --with a 5000 rpm stall converter.

Lots of those cars still use a 2 speed power guild trans.
