I think that I have a family of squirrels under the roof. They have entered by managing to rip up a short segment of the aluminum flashing below the roof. Any suggestion as to which is the best pest exterminator to contact in the Durham area?

I think you can get a cage from animal control to capture them. I believe there's no cost.

After that.....up to you how to get rid of them - Permanently or otherwise.

Wooly given the lack of meat I would guess that 10 minutes in a pressure cooker would be approx. 3 - 4 hours in a slow cooker. Just make sure that there is lots of fluids in the pot. You wouldn't wan the meat to be too tough now. Tender adn falling off the bone is the optimum.

Actually using a slow cooker might be a better idea as it will then give you time fix the access point for the little critters, then enjoy a nice meal.

What wine goes best with squirrel?

I've been having a similar problem. In another thread (in the General section) I suggested a live trap.

I contacted the SPCA in Durham where I live. They don't have traps to loan out, and suggested a rental place.

I called a couple, they're $25 / day, $50 / week on average.

Went to home hardware and bought one for $30. I set it up at around 2 pm today. I checked just now and the trap had been triggered. When I got closer I could see reddish brown fur. Could it be the red squirrel that is driving me nuts?

No, it was a chipmunk. I let it go.

So the saga continues. The trap works quite well, and for $30 you can't go wrong. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Anon.

p.s. The trap is made by Havahart or something similar, and it was on sale at Home Hardware if this helps!

When I was in my teens we had an issue with squirrels too. Got into the garage and chewed up a bunch of stuff. After getting the run around from animal control and stuff we were told to take care of it ourselves.

So we did.

About 5 .22's later, probelm solved. No more family of squirrels.

Everyone is so gun shy these days that if anyone saw me in my yard with a rifle I'd probably get arrested by the swat team. But I see your point :)

So far, 24 hours later, I've caught one more chipmunk. Both chipmunks have eaten all the peanut butter that I've put out as bait so I haven't actually had the trap set up for long with bait in it, in the last 24 hours.

I'll try again though. Going to try and figure out a way to keep the chipmunks away from it. Without a rifle. :)

I guess I should ask are you SURE that your problem is squirrels? It may be chipmunks, they are also a scurring type of animal. We had some in our area. We set live traps and then relocated them to a happier place, about 3 miles and a creek away. No problems with them since. It took about 6 trappings and transports but worth the effort.
