Try a very small but extremely efficient free utility called Hijackthis!
Google it. There are tutorials on their site. But be very careful & take your time. Do not delete anything that is critical.
I just used this for some hard-to-remove spyware on my laptop and it worked like a charm.

Always google whatever it is you can't get rid of; you can usually find some info about it and how to remove it.

And yeah, don't be deleting anything and everything with Hijackthis; make sure it's only the bad stuff.

I've tried that, Ad-Aware is useless...

It's useless
Why do you say the MS Malicous Removal tool is useless?

It's worked quite well for me when Norton did not.

Scam or not?

I ran XoftSpySE on my laptop and it tells me I have a CWS.Oslogo file that is a severe risk. When I click "remove" to kill the file, I am taken to a website that asks me for $39 to buy the removal tool.

But, I also ran full/deep scans using the following tools, all of which failed to find the CWS file:

Adware SE
AVG Free
Spy Sweeper
Microsoft Malicious Software tool
Spybot S&D
and, oddly, CWSshredder, which is supposed to be the best CWS removal tool out there.

All versions of the above programs were updated immediately prior to running the scans, yet none of them found the Oslogo file.

So, is the XoftSpySE a reputable tool, or are they simply trying to get $40 off me?

Thanks.

I had never heard of XoftSpySE until I Googled it. In my opinion, any "anti-spyware" program that finds supposed problems that other programs don't and then demands payment to remove them is suspect.

You seem to have already run a good selection of reputable programs, aside from the questionable XoftSpySE. One other good program is SpywareBlaster.

Re reading this thread...I recall having something similar on one f my machines..and the only way to remove it was to run the anti spyware removal patch or software in safe mode. I remember reading that you run it first in regular winXP mode.reboot and restart in safe mode.

Then in safe mode, run it again without any system or drivers starting in the background..then you are sure you've removed it.
