The spiders are real but the stories of their escapades are overstated.
Camel Spiders, found even in the North American deserts of the SW US, can run up to 10MPH. They are totally harmless to humans however. The largest variety are found in the Middle East and the photo is authentic.
They aren't poisonous; they don't secret novocain, and they don't eat human flesh. If you are a scorpion though, you better run for your life!
