The misspelled paragraph is usually intelligible to those for whom English (including the North American version thereof) is the mother tongue. For many who learned English as a foreign language, a misspelled paragraph like that is virtually incomprehensible.

I would assume it works the same for other 'western' languages such as German, Italian etc.?

But what about Arabic or Chinese? Does it still work for them?

When I was studying languages, I was told that a common language is enables national building ( I don't mean civilization).

So when African tribes become a nation they speak and write a common language. When European countries lose their dialects and speak and write a common language they become a nation.

When McLuhan said the "medium is the message" what he meant was that media tools like newspapers radio, TV (and now the internet), a common language and a nation was built.

In Quebec, they take the written language very seriously.

So an occasional spelling error is fine, but if you can speak and write the language, please do it correctly.
