So, what's the generally accepted fudge factor speeding in Canada? Is it different on the highways vs. local roads?

In the States, the usual rule is:
0-5 mph over the posted speed limit = Safe
5-10 mph over the posted speed limit = Usually safe, but you probably want to lay off the accelerator if you see a cop.
10-15 mph over the posted speed limit = You're pushing it, and you probably want to softly lay on the brake if you see a cop.

Any suggestions for Canada?

Fucken in the 100 km/h zones everybody speeds, even when the police are in the next lane traffic still goes 105 km.

110 you are likely safe, even up to 120 I am told but I try to go 115 to play it safe. Last thing I need is a ticket someplace where it be a pain and hassle to go the court to fight it.

150 or more. they impound your car for 7 days and take away your drivers license also for that week and fine your butt a few thousand bucks.

Here in Michigan, 95 mph in a 70 mph zone is a 3 point ticket with fine of under $200. 95 mph in the 100 km/h zones in Ontario is a crime.

Totally crazy. Just like Incalls here in Michigan would be big time felony, over in Toronto its almost legal. But driving fast is more cool here in Michigan.

Oh well, gas is cheaper then sex and both can be a thrill

respect speed zones when 80 km highways suddenly turn to 60 or so..Cops are much tougher in hamlets, villages and smaller communities, and rightfully so. get nailed there and there will be no mercy

imo 10km/h over is the safest bet, i drive by cops and they don't pull me over lol and that's in city/hwy. 15-20km/h is 50/50 if you're feeling risky..but wouldn't do so if you're the only car on the road. rush hour on the hwy is pretty weird though.. sometimes they don't give a shit and actually drive down the fast lane moving slower moving vehicles so everyone could pick up the pace. me and a lot of other cars are usually doing 125-140 during the early mornings on the 401 eb.

Don't forget if its not a rental car your plates show you are from out of town. Yeah I seen sports cars with Ontario plates doing 130 and the police going the other way and keep on going. I thought shit if I went that fast in my car with no plate up front cause Michigan has no front license plate, they make a U turn for sure--but I'm freaken paranoid not just careful

Some Canadians just don't like us Yankees from the states, cops, terbbites, etc.

Add about 25%. Anything above that and you've got a decent chance of getting pulled over if seen. Not that you're completely in the clear if you do below that though....

I usually do 60 in 50's, 100 in 80's, and 130 on the 400 series if I'm driving alone. I'll pick up the speed by 10km/h if others are doing it, especially behind me. I've logged >250,000km that way and never been pulled over.

I've gotten into the habit of planning my time as best as I can according to mileage, speed limits and my estimated traffic conditions. I do not need additional stress, fines or insurance hikes. I try to plan for the reasonable worst case scenario and fire up the laptop or read if I am early.

Plan ahead, manage your time and you do not usually need to speed. You own your 24 hours a day - excluding the 8.5 hours a day your employer has contracted from you, you own all other time expenditures.

That is really cool but I bet you got Ontario plates. The out of town cars stick out. I never been pulled over in Canada, not once but I stay close to the limit, 5 over max in the 50 zones. I have done 130 for short times with traffic and 120 for over 30 mins as long as others were passing me often.

The semi trucks are now limited to 105, that stinks. They used to help keep traffic a moving. Once me and this semi were passing all the other semi trucks, he was doing a steady 120 and I was hanging with him and then pulling away at times hitting 130-135--this was before stunt driving law came to be. Then I would back off at times and the semi would catch up and pass me or come close.

We dodged a few cops. If I seen the semi slow down, I did also, then when he started to gain speed I would jump ahead. I come up fast on people in the left lanes and they would move over for me and the semi was able to pick up more speed. I was slowing down at times to keep a space open for his big rig. We were going at it for over an hour and drove pass mark units hiding in the ditches, the 3rd time we slip pass near the speedlimt, doing about 112-- I got scared and decided to let him on go. This was on the long 401 stretch between Windsor from Hamilton . Twice i was pushing 130--135 and noticed the semi backing way off or it was blind spot--a dip in the road or a curve---and I would brake it down and go pass some cop sitting with radar. If I was ahead I leave my foot enough on the brake to keep my brake lights on the whole time coming up on the unit--so traffic behind me hopefully would slow on down also.

People used to pump their brakes to warn drivers of cops of ahead, ah the good old 55 mph limit days. If you seen brake lights flashing on and off you would slow down and then do the same with your brakes coming up on a cop. Everybody didn't do it but 10% of people did...not today, nobody gives shit about anybody

I never use radar detectors, they are legal here but my eyes and brain works better. Too often traffic slows down for nothing or too early. I like backing off 30 seconds early, not 5 mins

Today thou in Canada I just try to go 115 or slower now, unless everybody is zipping past. I'm getting older and those semi trucks are fucked. I'm passing them right up at 115:(

canada's is on the metric system. Not more than 10 km/h over the posted is usually safe from spped traps and tix

I regularly go 120 on the 401 and have never been pulled over. 130 and over would be pushing it although I have gone by radar traps at that speed and not been pulled over. To be safe stay below 125.

Yep, but when I travel in the States I tend to do 15mph over on the Interstate too. Nothing. Maybe you guys are just friendlier down there ;)

If you go to Quebec and you don't have Quebec plates you want to keep relatively close to the speed limit as their cops will see you in a pack of Quebec cars and just pull you over.

You did notice he was referring to speeding in the States when he gave his list?

On the big 400 series highways i think +20 km/h and you should be ok. They have enough people driving 130+ to nail, so 115-120 is not worth their time. In general i keep i less than 15 over. Except in 40-60 speed limits where i keep within 10.

If I go over the limit I set the cruise so not to be an even ten over. Ie. 109 119 129. I know if I were manning a radar I'd have a threshold 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 over, not 3,6, 17 over. Also, if you do get nailed you are in a lower category. ie doing 109 in 90 is a lesser ticket than 110 in a 90.

+20 km/hr on the 400 series highways.

Anything more than 20 km/hr and you're pushing your luck. The other thing is that if you go barreling by a cop at 130, and you see him, make sure you hit the brakes to give him "respect". Cops I know have said that if they see the brake lights come on and if they have clocked you at 130 they are more liable to let you go if they see the tail lights because you have acknowledged their authority by hitting the brakes.

As whitewaterguy stated, careful of the speed drops on the secondary highways. When the speed limit drops from 80 to 50 for example.
