Outrage as ticket counts go sky high
No confirmation on Toronto but Hamilton MP states you WILL get a ticket for exceeding speed by only *1KM* per hour!!!

Toronto issues over 7000 tickets in less than 30 days of operation

Apparently some of the cameras were not calibrated properly, and any tickets from those cameras will be expunged.

On the other hand, as most of the cameras are located near schools, how hard is it to not speed in a school zone, even by 1 km/h?

Renforth (their number one ticket generator) is a street I avoid because of the school zone. Something about the street makes it seems like you need to cruise with your foot on the brakes.

EVERY single camera is in a school / community centre zone

These speed cams are not out on 401
They are looking for people in community safety zones

Going 1KM over speed limit can net you a ticket there

300 (299 I think was official number) were invalid

Out of 7500 thats a low percent

I still don't get why anyone would take exception to getting a speeding ticket in a school zone, etc.
Why would a person not drive as carefully as possible in those zones, and even try to stay be a km/h or two under the speed limit?

Are you saying that having cameras there is not fair? Or are you just warning us how little room there is for driver error in those zones...

Even with a digital speedometre its not that accurate (god help you if your car has analog dials lol)
You cant drive on cruise control to ensure no variations in speed (since its a school zone or high pedestrian zone)
I do think that a 1KM variation is not what they should be hunting

I get it when someone is driving at 50+ in a 30km school zone but going 31 in a 30 or 41 in a 40 seems a bit too aggressive ticketing

I get your point, and even agree that 1 km/h over is subject to too much chance of speedometer error.

As for me, in those zones I will probably hold my speed to 5 km/h (+/- 1km/h) below the posted limit, out of caution for the school kids, and to avoid a ticket in case my speedometer is incorrect. It may piss off the drivers behind me for a few moments, but so be it.

Which is why I believe that they do not currently, as a general rule, ticket unless over 15km/hr. They have to leave some room for error. I don't see how the possible margins of error would change because it is in a school zone.

The cops with speed guns most probably won't ticket you until you're at least 10km/h over the speed limit, at their discretion.

But TeeJay is saying that the speed control cameras are set to the exact speed limit, and you will be automatically ticketed by the speed camera system at 1km/h or more over the limit. There is no human discretion involved.
