To expect "historical accuracy" in a fictional show or movie is just plain stupid.
Go watch a documentary if you want the real story - so to say you don't watch because of that is moronic.
This show is mindless violent sexual excitement. It's barely one step up from a soap opera. Period.
I watch for no other reason then to escape life for 45 min.

The slave and class wars of Ancient Rome make for very sad reading. This looks like a very sensationalistic mini-series, I have no interest in watching it.

Besides Stanley Kubrick had the final word on Spartacus. Here is the fight scene between Kirk Douglas and Woody Strode (the man who broke the colour barrier in the NFL).

this scene beats the shit out of a new series with one hand tied behind its back

Here is a sampling of reviews:

Entertainment Weekly Ken Tucker
After artistic duds like the TV version of "Crash," Starz may have found its destination series in Spartacus. This might prove to be the not-at-all-guilty pleasure of the season.

Chicago Tribune Maureen Ryan
Spartacus develops into an enjoyably soapy escape--a la the similarly sweaty and sex-drenched "True Blood"--as its first season progresses.

Chicago Sun-Times Paige Wiser
There's no denying that stylized decapitations are entertaining, especially when accompanied by a generous helping of soft porn.

Los Angeles Times Robert Lloyd
Given that Spartacus does not stumble in what it sets out to do, one's objections to the show, if objections one has, will be moral, or simple matters of taste, to the extent that those two concerns can actually be separated.

Zap2it (Inside the Box) Hanh Nguyen
Eventually, the series makes way for just enough plot to give our poor, overstimulated eyes a rest. There's a bit of political maneuvering, fierce rivalries, the examination of slavery vs. free will, ludus-yard hazing and even romance.

Boston Herald Mark A. Perigard
Spartacus fetishizes violence even more than it depicts sex and nudity, which is often. There’s a whole lot of B.C. banging going on here.

New York Post Linda Stasi
It is trashy fun as Spartacus, who is not really that interested in overthrowing oppressive Roman rule right now as he is in getting his sexed-up wife back, fights his way up gladiator rankings and out.

Miami Herald Glenn Garvin
The result is compulsively watchable pulp, provided you have a high threshold for decapitations and copulations, sometimes simultaneous.

Washington Post Hank Stuever
It's deliciously, marvelously bad, and I was helpless in its grip. It's a long way from Kubrick, but what isn't?

Jesus,

That gladiator owner piece of shit is quite the piece of work. Dude is fucking evil incarnate!

Makes the show that much more interesting. :D

Him and his wife (Lucy Lawless).

One thing though, did they really have that many plastic surgeons back in the day? I mean seriously. So many perfect breasts without even breast support? Get the fuck outta here!

ANDY WHITFIELD (SPARTACUS) HAS CANCER

Andy Whitfield, who’s currently starring in the Starz drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and will begin treatment immediately in New Zealand. As a result, production on the second season of Spartacus — which was scheduled to get underway later this month — has been delayed.

Whitfield’s cancer was detected early and his prognosis is good. “I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” said Whitfield in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” said Starz president Chris Albrecht. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.” (EW)

Sad news, I wish him all the best.

actually, they aren't enhanced, if you notice they are all natural. I can see this being realistic because you have to remember they are slaves and purchased by the dominus. If you could buy any woman you want would you a) get an ugly one? and b) keep them around when their tits/looks fade?

Now saying I ever would "buy" a slave, but if I did I sure wouldn't buy an uggo lol.....

....there are numerous movies & TV shows that do a very good job of historical and other types of accuracy & realty. Some of us care (sometimes) and many dont.

However while I give Spartacus style points, all I do now is FF for the hot sex. Lucy and the other babes are yummy and I am sure many gals enjoy the sweaty male hunks.

It is absolute crap as far as hand-to-hand combat, training and the way REAL people behave.

For example there is NO way an adult warrior like Spartacus would be lunging, raving and begging his enemies for his wife. Not to deny that brutish barbarians fell in love, but expecting mercy from a Roman Legate (already clearly shown to be a piece of shit) DUH?
