When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 C.


The Russians used a pencil.

I owned a couple of those Fisher space pens. They were great!

So were my pencils.

I bought my dad a 'space pen' at the store in the Smithsonian Institute in D.C., back in the late 70s.
It would even write upside-down. Pressurized ink.

No, the wax shavings could get into and clog all kinds of things.....

Ever tried to use a crayon in 150C heat with no atmosphere? Shit, they become a soggy mess when my kids leave them in the back seat of my car in the summer. I can't tell you how many passengers have gotten an ass full melted of wax.
