Heaven, definately Heaven
I don't know if their policy has changed, but it's usually a first come, first serve basis. You show up early, they let you board first getting the seat. Otherwise, it's just like any "Disney" style airline. The staff is friendly, you get your free coke and nuts, you make your destination and they throw you off the aircraft.

I don't fly WN.

As soon as the 24 advanced window opens, go online and get your boarding pass. Even if you cant print it, get it. Many of the "A" slots are now given to new Premium/Business class passengers automatically, so there are precious few "A" slots left for the masses.

There is also a new policy that the assign number for the A-B-C groups, then you line up according to number in your letter row. It saves you from having to get there an hour in advance to get a good spot, but it makes it even more important to get your seat assignment as soon as you can online.

Usually you can get a non-middle seat as long as you are in the B group. Also, try to fly the very last flight of the day, because it rarely picks up new passengers at the same rate as it drops them off as it goes on its route.

Thanks. I was planning on doing that even though I won't have access to a computer and printer at my destination. I'm planning to go either to a library or the business centre of a large hotel.

Need the computer but dont need the printer. Just go ahead and "check in" and go through the entire process.

When you get to the counter just tell them that you forgot or lost the boarding pass. You will be considered "checked in" once you go through the process online.

Trust me - I do it weekley and it never fails.

I had the worst customer service (disservice) from these bastards. To summarise;

Coming back form Nashville a couple of years ago, they kept me in line for an hour to check in. Then, they didn't tell me that the plane had left, with my diabetic medication on board in my luggage that couldn't be 'carried' on board, due to their stupid rules. Then, they didn't give a rat's ass to help me to get my luggage to me until after about 24 hours without my meds. The idiot at check-in just walked away when I told her that I needed to get my meds and that I needed to TO that night, and that it was theior fault that I was unable to get on board in time. The plane was still at the gate when I got to check-in, BTW. I had to call my travel agent and it cost my company $200 to get me on a flight back home. When I got to TO, I found out that they had taken off my luggage and it was held in Detroit because I wasn't on the plane that they did not allow me to get on. Isn't it illegal to allow luggage on board without the tarveller, being a very gross violation of security????

Stupid asses, I will NEVER fly with Southwestern ever again.

IMO, Southwest is a terrific airline -- friendly and affordable -- and I am pleased to give them my money as often as I can. If it's a short flight, you don't even have to bother with the check-in-by-computer game. Just show up and sit whereever. You might sit in a middle seat, or next to a young mom with a child on her lap. So what? It's kinda fun. And often as not, you can still sit in one of the first rows, and be off the plane quicker.
They have developed tremendous brand loyalty, and are the only profitable major US airline. Fly them once, and you'll see why. They're usually on time, if not early, and they typically fly out of smaller airports with less flight traffic.
Buffalo is a nice manageable airport, by the way.

Might want to check your luggage even if it's a smaller carry-on type if you're not one of the first in line. I've noticed people tend to not check the bags and storage space gets full pretty quickly.

Prefer Jetblue.
In the U.S. Jetblue is another choice very much worth looking into! A notch down from Jetblue is Airtran. Both offer flights from Buffalo.

The fine was not for failure to perform routine maintenance in the sense that most non-aircraft connected people would think of the term. It was for (apparently inadvertently) not performing FAA mandated strip downs on some of their older aircraft (they had done it on others) to inspect for pressurization stress cracks and then when they realized this, not immediately withdrawing those aircraft from service until the comprehensive inspections were done.
