for fear of offending the Muslims

Now do we rewrite history? Hitler tried it amongst others and it doesn't work.

Who are these Muslims that can exercise such influence? Is this another Third Reich emerging based on their religious beliefs?

So what?
"Not teaching" implies that it is simply not a part of their standard curriculum.

Now if they start teaching claims that it never happened, let us know.

I believe that the problem is that it is a part of the standard curriculum but people are ignoring it because it might offend some. I personally don't see how teaching accepted history is offensive. Shouldn't we all be able to learn from the evils of the past?
from the article
The report said teachers feared confronting 'anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils'.

It added: "In another department, the Holocaust was taught despite anti-Semitic sentiment among some pupils.

"But the same department deliberately avoided teaching the Crusades at Key Stage 3 (11- to 14-year-olds) because their balanced treatment of the topic would have challenged what was taught in some local mosques."
These teachers should have the guts to challenge racist attitudes in their class instead of burrying their heads in their sand. For the crusades, the teachers should make a huge effort to be balanced in their teaching and not just repeat the standard middle ages propoganda but avoiding the issue is not what a teacher should be doing.

There is a big worry from some Brits that the Islamic groups are gaining influence and challenging some aspects of the western culture. They are also worried that aspects of British law may no longer be applied equally (like the judge in Germany).

p.s. shall we continue this in the politics forum?

trying to pick off full details while watching TV is difficult and CNN doesn't always reveal their sources.

"They are also worried that aspects of British law may no longer be applied equally". Valid point. There is some high up in the Muslin community in Britain that is advocating Islamic law should be the law in Britain. Sorry didn't get the name. Now this is scary because he does have a following and won't condemn the tube bombings but denies any connection.

For them, they have to deny the Holocaust at all cost cause acknowledging the history means they have to recognize the state of Israel without a string attached.

Regarding the 3rd Reich, the Arabs, Muslims or Christians are Semites too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semite) and did that mean Adolf Ehrichmann is wrong ?

What, is there supposed to be a special course about the holocaust?

Listen, they didn't teach about the holocaust when I was in high school either.

Big deal.

In fact, they didn't even teach about WW2 and I took history throughout high school.

Hopefully they will wake up before it is too late (at least both Denmark and the Netherlands appear to be starting the process) much of the rest of Europe appears to be getting ready to march like lemmings off the cliff of liberal guilt as above - we can't teach about the Holocaust, Elementary School Children can't read the three little pigs because it will cause offense. And an culturally unassimilated Moslem population who driven by hard line mullahs insist we aren't going to accommodate to living in the West, Hell no - you're going to conform to our values. Read Bruce Bawer's While Europe Slept.

The Centre of the Universe!
The report concluded: "In particular settings, teachers of history are unwilling to challenge highly contentious or charged versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship."

Except for absolute nutjobs, how is the holocaust a "highly contentious...verson of history"? I mean, its not like some conspiracy theorist just made this up. This is probably the single most well documented and authenticated part of WWII.

However, I think it is important to note this does not appear to be a policy decision on the part of any particular school board/district in the U.K. Instead it seems that this is being done by individual teachers.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

Since when do teachers get to "choose" which parts of a curriculum they will teach and which parts they will ignore?

I wonder if the reason being given is not simply a cheap excuse to cover up the possibility that these individual teachers are themselves anti-semites and/or holocaust deniers. After all, what better way to deny a part of history you don't like/don't agree with than to become a history teacher and simply choose not to teach it.

I believe Canada needs to follow the Dutch lead. Scrap the department of immigration and remodel it to a department of immigration and assimulation. If you are not prepared to assimulate, I can respect that. However, either fuck off and go somewhere else or stay where you are.

Ignoring historical facts in schools because someone might be offended is the most asinine thing I've ever heard. Pay attention Canada and wake up. If we're not careful, we will end up like England.

Same here. My high school history was Canadian History. Grade 9 was about local history (in the London area) and then we did the standard French/English explorer stuff and on through recent history. Is that not what should be taught?

No offence, but I heard someone in the media last November (around Remembrance Day) talking about how Britain, Canada, et al went to war against Hitler BECAUSE of the holocaust. History has been skewed away from reality.

I don't think anyone considers the news media a relevant source for historical information. Particularly since it's seldom a relevant source for current information.
