+1 I make a point of going there every time I'm in Montreal.
Schwartz's is the standard by which all Montrealers judge smoked meat.Forget Rubens. Schwartz's smoked meat, up on St. Laurent, has no equals.
The place is called Jarry Smoked meat because it is on Jarry Street. This is a semi industrial area that had restaurants catering to the workmen. I have eaten there and did not find the smoked meat to be up to par with Schwartz's. If you were to tell a Montrealer that the best smoked meat is at Jarry Smoked meat you would be in danger of getting a plate of hot poutine thrown on you.Compared to Rubens, there is a 24 hour diner called Jarys in Anjou-St-Léonard, Montreal-East. I think it's the best in Montreal. (yes that would mean better than schwartz's smoked meat). Everyone has there own take, but I consider myself a smoked meat critic to an extent and Jarys does it gooooood.
Personally, I find that any and all of the well known bagel shops have amazing bagels if you eat them hot out of the oven. The good shops are open 24 hrs. because there is so much demand they bake through the night.I'd vote for Shwartz's, then go to one of the two bagel places, St Viateur or Fairmount.
And order incall, its the way to go there.
The last time I was there I bought a smoked meat sandwich 4 in. thick for $3.50 ( pre internet era )Another good place to try on Saint-Laurent for sandwiches is Boucherie Charcuterie Slovenia; it's not far from Schwartz. It's not a sit-down place, but the sandwiches are amazing.
In my university days, the English drank on St. Catherine Street or one of the side streets like Cresent street. The French drank on St. Denis Street. I am glad those days are gone. Now you can drink where you want and not be hassled. Two main party streets - Rue St Denis is more French oriented and Crescent St is more Anglo.
JoJo' Blues bar on St Dennis has great live music and hot waitresses. Good beers on tap.
Aux Vivres on St Laurent in Mile End, best veggi restaurant in the city (one of the best in the country); for funky veggi breakfast go up to le Cagibi on corner of St Laurent et St Viateur.I'm also going to Montreal in less than 2 weeks
Does anyone have any vegetarian-friendly restaurant reccos?
(entire menu doesn't need to be veg, just has to have a few good things)
Lost track of this thread.Quelle surprise......
Good thing this place closed down.
