So, I'm going to Montreal, for the first time! Any restaurants / places I should go?

+1 :) I make a point of going there every time I'm in Montreal.

Forget Rubens. Schwartz's smoked meat, up on St. Laurent, has no equals.
Schwartz's is the standard by which all Montrealers judge smoked meat.

Compared to Rubens, there is a 24 hour diner called Jarys in Anjou-St-Léonard, Montreal-East. I think it's the best in Montreal. (yes that would mean better than schwartz's smoked meat). Everyone has there own take, but I consider myself a smoked meat critic to an extent and Jarys does it gooooood.
The place is called Jarry Smoked meat because it is on Jarry Street. This is a semi industrial area that had restaurants catering to the workmen. I have eaten there and did not find the smoked meat to be up to par with Schwartz's. If you were to tell a Montrealer that the best smoked meat is at Jarry Smoked meat you would be in danger of getting a plate of hot poutine thrown on you.

I'd vote for Shwartz's, then go to one of the two bagel places, St Viateur or Fairmount.
And order incall, its the way to go there.
Personally, I find that any and all of the well known bagel shops have amazing bagels if you eat them hot out of the oven. The good shops are open 24 hrs. because there is so much demand they bake through the night.

Another good place to try on Saint-Laurent for sandwiches is Boucherie Charcuterie Slovenia; it's not far from Schwartz. It's not a sit-down place, but the sandwiches are amazing.
The last time I was there I bought a smoked meat sandwich 4 in. thick for $3.50 ( pre internet era )

Two main party streets - Rue St Denis is more French oriented and Crescent St is more Anglo.
JoJo' Blues bar on St Dennis has great live music and hot waitresses. Good beers on tap.
In my university days, the English drank on St. Catherine Street or one of the side streets like Cresent street. The French drank on St. Denis Street. I am glad those days are gone. Now you can drink where you want and not be hassled.

Agree that Shawrtz's is very good for smoked meat, but if you're not in that area, you do have other options.
Of the west end of the island, in Ile Perrot, there's Smoked Meat Pete. It's on par with Shawrtz's.
All over the greater Montreal area, there are fast food chains that go by names such as La Belle Province, Pataterie la Belle, etc. They all serve smoked meat now and most of them do a very good job.
There's also Dunn's on Ste. Catherine Street, and I think they have a few other branches.
Lester's in Outremont is also very good.

As far as bagels go, my favourite place is Fairmount.

No anti-meat places, but if you want a Deluxe Swiss Chalet type meal try Chalet BBQ on Sherbrooke near Decarie. BBQ chicken done over charcoal.

Damm! I just checked, Laurier BBQ on Laurier Street is closed. I heard that Gordon Ramsay had a deal with the family that owned the restaurant for him to associate his name to the restaurant. When things went bad in the deal Gordon sued them out of business.

I'm also going to Montreal in less than 2 weeks :)
Does anyone have any vegetarian-friendly restaurant reccos?
(entire menu doesn't need to be veg, just has to have a few good things)

:)
Aux Vivres on St Laurent in Mile End, best veggi restaurant in the city (one of the best in the country); for funky veggi breakfast go up to le Cagibi on corner of St Laurent et St Viateur.

Gibby's and Queue de Cheval will definitely get money from me :)

Bump!

I'm heading to Montreal this weekend and while Queue de Cheval is always a must, what else is going on? I'll be there for a few days - been to Montreal many times but haven't gone in a little while and have actually never been at Christmas.

Suggestions?

I guess I'm just looking for any specific recommendations for this weekend and early next week. Something cool going on perhaps?
