Skype incompatible with Firefox???

I d/l-ed and installed Skype this AM, although I didn't have time to set up my profile and enter the program. Almost immediately, I noticed that Firefox was having difficulty loading .gif, .jpg and Adobe pages on websites. I removed Skype and the problem ceased and life went back to normal.

So, Skype appeared to be the culprit -which is a shame as it seemed like a useful program.

Does anyone know a way around the problem I had?

Skype can/does use a lot of bandwidth when you are using it (talking to someone), but it is fully compatible with firefox. When it is running in the background it shouldn't affect your apps too much.
