I was just watching the one where Apu has to take the citizenship test to stay in the USA and Homer was pointing out on the Map where Springfield is and i would like to know What State is this Springfield in?

I know they have not said exactly but with all the info they give us what does everyone think?

I think it is either New York State or Illinois.

The official position of the Simpsons writers and creators is that Springfield is meant to be an "everytown USA" sort of thing. They make allusions to specific locations for two reasons: 1) confuse the fanatical Simpsons following whom eat this stuff up, and 2) to further imply that Springfield is everywhere.

However, I'm pretty sure I recall an episode that had a zoom-out from the simpsons house to a wide view of the planet (or just the US) and it was illinois. I think this was shown before this controversy started and since then, this clip was removed from syndication episodes.

I remember that episode and I think it is in reference to Illinois as well. But the mystery really is what makes it fun...

If you watch the episode "Behind the Laughter" which of course is a take off of "Behind the Music" the narrator makes a comment like "We don't know what's next for this northern Kentucky family" near the end of the show.

The name of the town Springfield was chosen, because it is the most common civic name in the US. Don't quote me on this but I believe there is up to 40 towns/cities that are named Springfield, hence the ambiguity on the Simpons about which state the town is in.

There was once a website that took into consideration every geographical clue given in the show (i.e. they live by a mountain so it can't be here, they are within driving distance of X so it can't be here) and came to the conclusion that there is no way the fictional Springfield can be in any state.

I remember an episode where someone says "Just what state are we in anyhow?" and Lisa replies, rather sheepishly, "Well if you read the clues you can figure it out."

On some other episode we saw an outer space map and it sure looked like Kentucky. Checking the map of Springfield Kentucky there are a lot of names close to it that you can recognize. So my vote is with Kentucky.

The Simpsons are Canadian. Lots of tell-tale clues (Matt Groening is 1/2 Canadian, his dad lived in Pickering Ontario, home to a nuclear power plant, close to an anonymous capital city (TO). Watch the opening sequence. As the camera (or whatever it is that films a cartoon) enters the school, it is quite clearly a Canadian flag flying outside the school. It's a US flag on the way back out of the school, but Canadian on the way in. Ya ya, they go to Washington, Homer chants "USA USA" all the time, and on the map they're in Illinois. But wait for it - final episode will reveal the truth, eh.

And the gorge can be the Rouge Valley in Scarborough.

I also remember in an episode when Spinal Tap came to visit Springfield. They said something about coming up route 401. Never heard of a route 401 in the states. The only 401 i know is the one that cuts across T.O. ;)
