Interesting POV Smylee, but I'm not following...can you elaborate on this point as it relates to post count? Thx!
When trying to determine the legitimacy of posts designed to ingratiate, castigate or obfuscate
join date isn't a clear indicator . You suspect someone who just joined but pimps and hookers
created some of their handles years ago and only bring them out when buisness needs some
help .

Post count is just one indicator but I find it very usefel in determing whether I need to do
some quick research .

.

In the past, I have joked about some of the White Knights who will go through a person's posting history if they disagree with that person on an issue. Even if they don't find anything, they still publicly post that "I went through your posting history" ... presumably as a way of letting you know you're being watched.
Ok - cool perspective! I've certainly been very guilty of that method of investigation in the past for sure, but never realized it could be interpreted in that way (kind of as a threat). I'll normally go though someone's posting history not so much based on post count, high or low irregardless, but more to see if I can discern a pattern of behaviour or consistency of opinion of the poster. I don't really watch anyone in particular, but seem to catch on repetitive types of responses, be they positive or negative. If someone has very few posts, I find it can be difficult to discern the actual "tone" of some posts, and sometimes take a bit more time before I reply...

You can't read, I said you have the option to ignore criticism and to write how you want. From your response it sounds like a tender spot with you though, try not to let it become a fixation. Obviously you do give a rat's ass.
Read my last sentence again.
I can read, and did, recognizing your propensity for going off like a canon at the littlelest thing, and not wanting to set you off. Dude, its just a conversation, don't get so hostile so quickly. You asked a question, and I answered it honestly. Don't freak out...

Fair enough. If you go through a person's posting history, and find something worth reporting (excessive hatred for a particular SP, for example), that's one thing.

What I can't understand are the people who go through someone's posting history, find nothing, but nonetheless publicly report that they went through your posting history. That's happened to me a few times -- I'm sorry that I'm so boring. Nonetheless, if you didn't find anything, what's the point of reporting on it?

In those cases, I think it looks like an intimidation tactic by someone who thinks that winning his approval is an important factor on this board. And that's why I link it to the sense of entitlement.

IMO post counts should remain in the public domain. However, the post count number should also contain more detailed information. For example, the number of ‘Reviews’ and ‘TOFFT’ per quarter, this would give others a more accurate picture as to the type of participation each member brings to the TERB.

I think there should be a bar graph under each handle, showing everyone the length of their erect cock.
The ladies would have pie charts indicating the length their pies could handle.

These additions would be useful in settling political arguments.

The post count is too important for establishing credibility. Otherwise you could post a handle with a similar spelling to a well known poster (I will be Shiek. Or Fred Zee). And it would be pretty easy for people to be sucked in, without being able to see the post count to know it is the real poster. Same with the join date, it gives an indication of how likely they are to be aware of the history of the board.

I for one, feel that post counts should be removed.

INSTEAD, I've seen many forums that use a reputation or respect rating, where other users "rep" (or whatever the term is) a poster for a quality post, insightful comment, etc. Since users have to actively rep one another, it gives a truer representation of a user's contributions to the board. A higher rating means many people think highly of them. There's also the option of disabling negative reps, to prevent bullying and revenge. I think it's already built into vBulletin (the script used by TERB).

I've also seen a thanking system as well, which might serve a similar purpose.

If one of these eventually replaces post counts, perhaps they could be implemented in stages so that quality posters have a chance to build up their reputation rating before post counts are hidden.

Not sure about settling political arguments, but it would certainly add to the entertaining factor around here.

Who do I contact to get my pie chart?

I like that idea. The ladies will all show empathy towards me.

Why was this thread even started...why, does it bother you?
Again, just for The Bandit: Based on some recent behaviour trends across various forums/threads, I'm curious if eliminating public visibility of the member post count would change some of the negative current TERB culture and allow for a freer exchange of opinions / perspectives.
