Growing up, my parents always kept the jar of peanut butter in the fridge. My buddy's wife was telling me that it didn't need to be in there. They in fact, just keep their peanut butter in a cupboard. It's certainly easier to spread when it's not cold/hard.

In grocery stores, peanut butter is on regular shelves. Of course, they're still sealed. But in places like Bulk Barn, their peanut butter isn't in a fridge. Did my parents have it wrong all those years?

If you use it with some regularity - keep it in the cupboard - if it might be there in 6 months - the oil seprates and it developes a sharp taste - but it cannot hurt you.

Peanut butter shouldn't be in the fridge? or doesn't need to be in the fridge?

I just opened up a new jar of No Name crunchy peanut butter this morning and actually had to resist my conditioning of putting in the fridge when I was done with it. It was nice and easy to spread!

Thanks folks.

Actually, like most things in life, it depends on the peanut butter.

I can't answer your poll: Whether peanut butter needs to be refridgerated after it is opened depends on the type of peanut butter you are using:

All natural peanut butter, made just from peanuts, must be kept cold after opening. The natural oils in the nuts tend to separate from the mis (you have to stir it back in) and will go rancid on the shelf.

On the other hand, most commercial peanut butter has hydrogenated fat and other sugars (and perhaps preservatives depending on the brand you use) added to the mix with the peanuts! These do not have to be put in the fridge because they will not separate (since they were mechanically emulsified) and have added chemicals to allow for prolonged room temperature shelf life.

I use the peanuts only type - there is really no comparison in taste - although people watching their fats need to be aware. On the other hand, it is only protein and nut oil as opposed to the sugars and other carbs often found in commercial products.

As for spreading - if its going on toast, just put a drop on the hot bread for a sec and it will melt making spreading no problem. For sandwiches, stir it and it will soften.

Hope that helps.

nuts

peanut butter if used reg can be kept in the cupboard however if you take a long time to eat it it should be in the fridge as like all nuts can become *rancid* which is the sharp taste i bake reg and always keep nuts in my freezer it keeps them fresh and stops them from going bad.
if you need to keep it in the fridge just take it out about 1/2 hour before use then it wont be hard (lol omg that didn't sound good :p )

The Adams sugar-free peanut butter sold at Costco and all the better retail outlets, says on the jar to refrigerate after opening. I don't know about peanut butter that is full of nothing but sugar, but if you go natural you should definitely stick it in the fridge.

Read the label carefully

No matter what it is it pays to read the label. If it needs to be refrigerated, it will say so. If it says nothing, it probably doesn't, just depends on your personal taste.
Watch out for xpiry dates too, I found a squeeze bottle of mayo that had xpired August 2004! Who knew? Tasted alright tho, builds character and the immune system.

LeatherDoll is right

If it's pure peanut butter, it needs to be in the fridge. The other stuff is so loaded with hydrogenated oil & preservatives, it doesn't matter. Anything that keeps its shape and doesn't spoil outside the fridge is ...

Regarding all-natural peanut butter, there is an alternative to stirring the oils in. You can also pour it out when you open the package. This will significantlly shift the protein-to-fat ratio. At first it will compromise the taste a little bit and make it harder to spread. But most natural oils don't refrigirate well - they tend to change in taste when cooled - so if it takes you more than a week to finish the jar, you may come out ahead.

I pour the majority of the oil out but you're right, when you do that it makes it a bitch to spread sometimes. I don't mind but some others who've had my pb think it's ridiculously thick and lumpy.

I never put my ketchup in the fridge. It lasts for months, no problem. Who wants a cold condiment on a hot burger?
