I like the look of these cars. Price is good. Diesel engine is quiet.

Would lease..as payments are good!.

But im being discouraged by workmates, given the cost of working on the cars.....ie: OIL CHANGE at $120.00

I can do some mechanical work...can I do an oil change? Or are these cars oddballs that always have to go to the dealers?

I had 3 of them in succession a while back, and I loved them. They are wonderfully engineered, but not as well manufactured, so my advice is to not keep them beyound the warranty time. They drive very well, and I loved the diesel engine.

If you look at the premium....about $2500, you simply CANNOT make up that money over the period of a lease. Compare the residuals carefully. If they give you 100% of the residual or close to it (they do have very good resale value) then it may be worth it. For leasing it would probably be hard to beat a Civic or Corolla/Matrix as they have really good residuals.

Consumer reports annual auto edition (April month) gives new Jetta significantly lower rating than previous model. VW has reduced the price point significantly but they are not as good a car.

Sorry Ganmand.explain that one to me...Good engineering....Bad Manufacture ???
They drive extremely well, almost like a MB or BMW, but I found that they were not so well put together. Small things went wrong, that should not. I think on all 3 of mine, the backup light failed. Not the worst thing, but why? I also blew a couple of clutches and one Jetta, I kept past the warranty period, turned out to be a disaster, with gearbox, clutch and head gasket failure. I did not follow my own rule to get rid of the cars when the warranty ran out, because I was waiting to buy a Passat diesel, that VW delaayed for 2 years.

By the way, they are easy to work on, and oil changes are no problem.

I remember a time when two buddies and I tried to save some cash and change a brake light on a MB, but three reasonably tech savvy university grads couldn't do it even with the handbook, written by someone on bad meds. Our sense of uselessness was vindicated when the owner finally took it to the dealer and they had to 'phone' Germany and be guided through the process.

German engineering, hmmmm. My buddy still loves his car, but there are a few bugs.

That is MB, you cannot even change the oil yourself. But VW are actually easy to work on, and parts are easily and cheaply available.

VW's are not easy to work on. That's why it's called german engineering.

They stink. They smell. They're noiser than average. Poor electrical history.

Fair point, but I've regularly heard friends who've owned VW's talk about electrical problems.

His latest hiccups was have to replace the injectors after 250,000 km, possibly a result of bad/dirty fuel and he suffered severe sticker shock.

j.select. You may be right on some things...but I test drove it the other day...the emissions were non existant..and the noise is the same as gas. Pretty smooth and quiet!!!

I had heard that these two things had gotten better. I was quite surprised!!

I just loved the diesel engine. The torque is remarkable at low rpm's.

VW and MB are as different as Timmies and Starbucks.

Don't keep the VW that long. Follow Danmand's rule: Keep no VW beyound warranty period.

i've known a few VW go way over 10 years and/or 1/2 million km with reasonable upkeep and lots of smiles, but everyone knows someone who knows someone; sorry to Someone.

I don't know about up there but diesel fuel is more expensive than gas down here.

I am not so concerned about fuel prices...the mileage on each tank makes the fuel price difference quite nominal....compared to the SUV I have now!!!

Of course the majority of stories are good ones. My rule is referring to diesel Jettas. Diesel engines are often more costly to repair.
