He never did. He's just referring to women in general. I guess that is better in your eyes.
Unfortunately I don't listen to Eminem, so it's hard for me to comment on that. I just don't think amateur female basketball team deserved the abuse. Had he said something about Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson, I would have had a completely different outlook on this situation.

He should absolutely be fired. What he said was very unprofessional and reveals what kind of person he is.

Although I find the rant by Michael Richards much more offensive, he still should be held accountable for his actions.
I was more offended by the Mayor of Atlanta calling jews, asians and arabs a bunch of money sucking leeches. But he apologized to them and did some photo-ops and all was forgiven (and no major outrage from anywhere outside of the local asian american group in atlanta).

I though they were pretty much the same type of guy - shock jock radio hosts who say controversial stuff for ratings. Are they not?
In my opinion shock jocks should stick to shocking us about current events, politicians, and celebrities, not saying racist things about hard working people.

What Al sharpton, Eminem and howard stern have said is irrelevant. Two wrongs don't makea right.

Whether the girls were listening or not does not matter. Unless you're suggesting that being privately racist is okay.

What's important here is that he chose to use insults based on race and that is wrong.

Should he lose his job? Tough to say. Supporters of freedom of speech will have a different answer than members of the ACLU and that will differ from the sponsors and management of NBC.

If something severe happens to Don I won't be upset as he has to know that what he says over the radio can come back to haunt him..... it's not exactly his first day on the job.

I saw a clip of Imus on Sharpton's show and Imus referred to himself as a cracker. I thought that was a weak attempt at him saying "oh look I even turn those comments on myself." But I like that Sharpton shut him down and said "have some respect for your own race."

Nope. Not even close. Imus has a political vibe to his show and mostly has politicians on his show.
Are you serious? I've heard audio clips of his show where he has mock interviews of guys pretending to some celeb. I heard him interview someone pretending to be Hulk Hogan in mock accent. Same with the Mets GM in a fake spanish accent. Both times they made the person being impersonated to sound like a clown. I thought Imus was clown too.

What has Stern said about this anyway? He used to make me laugh the way he cut up Imus.

Stern hasn't said anything that I know of. I just listed the names of people used in this thread.

If you're gonna fire Imus then you ought to fire or boycott every person that makes racial jokes, whether they are black, white or Asian.
This person sums it best:

"The comment was inexcusable that is true, but if Don Imus is fired I hope no one will ever attend a Chris Rock show or a Dave Chapelle show. They both denegrate "white folks" regularly in their acts. Racism swings both ways. I do believe that Imus should be punished, but it's as though all the sins of all the racists in the past are now being hung on this man. It's an interesting witch hunt feeding a hungrey pack."

I think Al Sharpton should be fired for racism. I also think Matt Lauer of NBC should be fired for an excessive salary. Imus, should be removed from the air, except WFAN. *OR* should be removed from all radio and ONLY allowed on MSNBC mornings.

Imus

For the first comments (he and his cronies about the ho's) no. Everyone is entitled to a mistake. It was his "you people" comment as he is trying (why with Sharpton is beyond me.......) to apologize and explain, that should have cost him his job (at least it is what caused him to have a two week vacation).

I like vs.2 - An African or African American or anyone of African descent who wears that hair natural and has one of the many textures of woolly-like (nappy) hair.

But I don't have any hair! :(

Huh. Who knew I'd make into the Urban Dictionary?

Don't think he should be fired.

It's a double standard world. A lot of free publicity for his name and show that I'll say.

Okay I just saw the Rutgers Ho's in the news conference and there is a hot Korean and a white chick there too. So when is the Korean and the white girl going to pose in Playboy? Maybe they can tongue each other naked in a duo sitting on hoop balls?

A few points:

  1. Don Imus is neither funny nor entertaining. He should retire for those reasons alone.
  2. Calling a woman a "ho" is not racist. It's arguably sexist, if the suggestion is that all women are "hos". Since Imus is married, I doubt he is taking that position.
  3. "Nappy-headed" does not refer to all blacks or all black women. I'm not sure how it adds to "ho", unless he's suggesting that nappy-headed black women are "hos". That's a stretch.
  4. "Nappy-headed" is a term used by whites and blacks to describe certain hair styles. When used by blacks or whites, the implication is that these hair styles are "low class". Was Imus analyzing the hair styles of these girls? I doubt it. I think he was just pulling out the only "black lingo" he could think of at the moment to talk about the girls in "ghetto speak".
  5. No one should listen to Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson. About anything. You've got more problems with your head than nappy hair if you do.

I don't care what happens to Don Imus. I certainly don't need him as my spokesperson for free speech. However, I'm not sure how his dismissal would change a damn thing about race relations in the U.S.

p.s. I had a look at the pictures on the Rutgers Women's Basketball web site. The women pictured there are most unattractive. Didn't take the time to compare them to other NCAA women's basketball teams, but I'd say if that was Imus' point, he's not altogether off the mark.
