One of the greatest debates side-by-side with the concept of Religion. I agree with many but still voted for YES, some humans just can't be helped. Its def. unfortunate but if the DP is in effect it will def. hinder those who are thinking about doing something awful, might not eliminate it totally but will decrease the numbers. Plus if someone consciously takes a life and found guilty - well - guess wait - less tax I pay and more trips to Tim's. I don't think imho we have become less civilized but I feel we would become more empathetic and would think twice about harming each other.

Great thread btw - love these types of conversation.

I voted no, but how can Canada legally allow assisted suicide while saying it's wrong to have capital punishment?

I fully support the death penatly as a form of justice, deterrence, and retribution. However, only in the most extreme cases and where there is no doubt of the guilt of the criminal. For example, the four gunmen who gunned down innocent civilians in Moscow deserve nothing less than the death penalty.
Fully support in above situations only. Something heinous and there’s a smoking gun.

I have real issues when people feel perpetrators or perpetrators themselves feel they have more rights than victims. They scream my rights…where were their concerns when they violighted someone’s else rights…

Funny how we can all remember their names
Pickton
Magnotta
Bernardo
Homolka
And some other names. But never the victims.

The families also have to go through the trials, the parole hearings, the headlines every time the perpetrators names are in the press.

“50 cents” in brass and lead gives them closure right fast.

Actually sort of know ( family connection) the mother that turned Mahaffy away in the wee hours. Was years before she slept well again.

Personally I think all inmates should be put to work, with the proceeds going to compensate the victims and their families. Seems like a waste for them to waste away idly in prison when they can be productive.
That's 5 bucks a day. 😂

Legally assisted deaths are only offered to people who are in full control of their mental faculties and ask for it. It is a personal decision and consent is needed. Not remotely comparable to the death penalty where the state executes you.

They dont have more rights. But perpetrators of even the most heinous crimes, have exactly the same rights as the victims. This is is afforded to every citizen via the constitution.

sure and if the law says it’s heinous and there’s smoking guns. So much for their rights.

And there’s closure. Nor do you get to rubberneck, and remember their names. And with respect to Magnotta who just wanted 15 minutes of fame himself…………maybe forgetting their names is a first step.

I agree Magnotta deserves to die because he killed kittens. Fuck that guy. lol.

On a serious note, the death penalty doesnt really provide closure according to studies.

I guess no-one will know unless. One thing they won’t have to live through. Over and over and over and over. I don’t need to ask an expert to know closure doesn’t happen until you close the book, paper or browser.

It’s not a hard concept to grasp toad. Can you explain why we remember Homolka but not Mahaffy. Don’t much care if you agree or not. So close the book and move on.

The studies have found that people dont really get closure but are just relieved to be free of the justice system. Thats not closure.

Now why do we remember Homolka and not Mahaffy? Its simple. The perpetrator is always going to be the more famous one for having committed outrageous acts.

How many of John Wayne Gacy's 33 victims do you really know of? Yeah, not one.

So now from rambling incoherent nonsense you are going to adopt the great JohnLarue strategy of being a broken record even after your points were addressed and thoroughly debunked? 🐸

Actual studies conducted would say otherwise. It objectively does not make sense because you cannot just forget your dead loved one because the criminal stopped breathing.

Nothing racist with what I said. Slam dunk again! 🐸

If you ask murder victims’ families, “closure is the F-word,” said Marilyn Armour, who directs the Institute for Restorative Justice and Restorative Dialogue at the University of Texas at Austin. She’s researched homicide survivors for two decades. “They’ll tell you over and over and over again that there’s no such thing as closure.”

In 2012, Armour and University of Minnesota researcher Mark Umbreit interviewed 20 families of crime victims in Texas — a state which regularly uses the death penalty — and 20 more families in Minnesota, which instead offers life without parole. They were curious about how families in both states coped with the sentences.

The 2012 study concluded families in Minnesota were able to move on sooner; because their loved ones’ killers were sentenced to life without parole, rather than the death penalty,

again, you can’t grasp dumb red neck whose iq isn’t 100. at the bottom of it all is morals they aren’t universal there is no black or white here. . Not unlike assisted suicide.

And you are a bigoted lying elitist racist who credibilty is shot and can’t grasp basic concepts. Nor can you grasp Canada is a free country and people are allowed their opinions. And move on. Isn’t it funny how you’ve jumped all over “this”.

It not going to happen, that ship has sailed and it not going to return under any government Cons or Libs. I would prefer they spend time and money on getting judges, crowns, support staff and facilities properly funded as well as address the Supreme court ruling on unreasonable delay, Charter violations which undermine victims' and citizen's faith in the judicial system.

You or I are not (thankfully) victims. So while debating this topic the only info we have to rely on is studies done of families who have lost loved ones to murder, where the perp was sentenced to death. It is the closest to accurate information we have on the subject. Refusal to listen to actual families who have suffered losses and instead thinking you know better, is elitist.

Not sure why you are so on edge. Whiffing too much?

Will add troll from now on to your very long list of character flaws.

It’s neither a whiff or hit. If you don’t like free countries where people can have opinions on moral issues like this . Get the FO. Bigoted elitist racist.

Before I forget. Thanks for playing Einstein. Knew like the sun rising in the east………not all that smart are you.

Opinions that run contrary to facts, is ignorance.

I presented facts and you responded with name calling.

Not even smart enough know. Facts like opinions don’t run countries. Parties do and they follow laws ( most of the time ) Nor know that laws are a reflection of societies morals. Hence moral issues like abortion, unassisted change or can.

Now move on troll, bigot, lying elitist racist. I can say that because you fit definitions of them in spades and it’s been shown proven a number of times. And let’s just ignore I expressed mine and then sure as the sun :)
