Should Canada Ban Handguns??

PM Martin has said he'll ban handguns if elected.

Is this the right step or will it be futile.
I dont see any reason for civilians to own guns. Rifles for hunting I understand but handguns dont serve any purpose other then collecting.

Find another collecting hobby I say.

We've had this discussion already a few weeks ago. Too many hillbillies believe that collecting a hand gun is their God given right. I still say ban bullets, a dog can sniff these at the border. Or have a 765% tax increase on bullets.

Anyone who is not involved in criminal activity should agree, otherwise, why do you really need a handgun.

Get caught with a gun and you get to spend your next 25 years up in the artic (we should copy the Russians). If some one dies by your gun, well let just say you'll never get a TAN again; seal buggers for everyone.

First have them build the Artic prision camps. One winter in a tent and the'll see the light and straighten up...

If someone was to kill a family member and the police had caught them.
The justice system can convict them and I'll would then shot them with there own gun!

Banning hand guns is not the answer.Those of us that abide by the laws either do not have guns or have them registered and secured.The guns on the street, for the most part are illegal weapons in the hands of thugs who don't give a damn about the law.They will have guns whether there is a ban or not.Tougher laws, longer sentences for gun related crimes, hard time in prison with few priveleges may make some of these thugs think about using guns.I have no problem with a ban ,I just don't see where a ban by itself will make a difference.

In all seriousness though, there should be a ban on handguns. As for collectors, let them collect, but only be able to be used and stored in registered gun ranges and not at home. There is no need for anyone to have a handgun. Hunting rifles are a different story, but civilians owning handguns are pointless.

As for someone saying it is their right to bare arms, this is Canada not the US. If you feel the "right" then go south.

It's because this country believes in rehabilitation instead of punishment. However punishment doesn't work either, look at death row in the U.S. has that stopped violent crime?

The gun used in this crime was already illegal. Why would spending billions of dollars to take guns away from law-abiding citizens make any difference? I don’t see the connection, other then some legally owned guns are falling into the hands of the thugs. Even if this relatively small source of guns is somehow eliminated, the other gun sources will easily make up the difference and keep these thugs supplied.

You want to spend billions of dollars, limit freedoms, and it will make absolutely no difference in the end.

Capital punishment is definately not the answer. I understand that life inprisonement is hard on taxpayers, but death punishing death is not a justification that Canada wants to go down. That would make us like our neighbors to the south, and how terrible would that be...

It will make a diffference though. Although it might be a small difference, it will still effect the number of guns on the street. It will never cut out crime completely and the use of handguns by thugs, becuase there will always be a market for these things, but you have to start somewhere.

It sends a message that guns will NOT be tolerated, unless you are a law enforcement officer or in the Canadian armed forces.

What god given right do yuo have to tell me I am a hillbilly. I hunt and fish and I DO BELIEVE this is a right.I have took all the required courses and pay all the required liences . Just to hunt I have to pay 40 for deer 40 for moose 40 for bear and then lience my dogs . Dogs have to be fed and all that other nice stuff .If YOU BELIEVE banning handguns will stop the crime yuo are living in a dream world.
They made us all register our guns BUT there is lots out there not registered.
Laws are laws but people have to abide to these rules before they are worth the paper they are wrote on . We have to have a lience to buy bullet too .
Please enlighten me as too how you are going to get these crooks to register their guns :?? THESE guys will have guns if they are banned or not . AND they will get bullets too .
The officer in Montreal was shot with a hunting rifle so now we can ban all hunting rifles too . :???
I believe the answer is LONG LONG setences. then it does not matter if the gun is registered or banned " when the person pulls the triger they know they are going to be BUBBA"S friend for a long time .
As fro handguns :: I have one and I do belong to the range.wether or not I own one is not an issue with me personally but . I do believe we have some rights and if they start there what is next . Long guns . Bows and arrows .

Because the US is wimpy about how they do it. Look at the last guy in California, a real bad ass yet they took 14 years to get rid of him. If you find someone with a gun who has committed a crime, expedite his trial then execute him within an hour of the guilty verdict.
