Here I go again. It seems like I go through a lot of tires but I have a few vehicles to deal with and I really don't like "all season" tires. That explains all the bloody tires in my life.

So I go to tirerack and start shopping for what I term "good" tires. Ones that will last me three or four summers and are top notch for low rolling resistance and handling. I end up with three candidates :

1) Yokohama ADVAN S.4
2) Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus
3) Pirelli Cinturato P7

The number (3) there looks like something I have never heard of and it looks like they cost an arm and a testicle. However they are the only ones that seem to match my criteria. I avoid anything from Goodyear or Firestone merely on grounds that they have really sucked in the past. Actually, that is not being fair or honest. In truth I went to a Goodyear shop in Cobourg Ontario and went looking for top of the line winter tires for my daughters Hyundai. Little itty bitty 13 inch tires and I was hoping for Blizzaks. I told them to not go cheap and get me top of the line winters. When I arrived to pick up the car it had some "made in china" crap called WaanLee or similar and they already had my $800. I looked at them and siad "what the fuck is this shit?" Yes, I do recall saying exactly that.

They said "supply is limited on 13 inch winter tires so this is the best we can do".

To this I said "in that case I'll give you $60 each for that trash and you can give me the difference back."

Oh well to this an argument started in which I told them to go fuck themselves and I would be back on Monday ( it was a Saturday ) to see the owner about this shit. I do believe I was fairly fucking livid and I may have said "buddies, you're fucking crooks and liars and I am okay with jail time to put you in a hospital ". Words to that effect. I was in the army as a combat soldier for well over a decade and I have, how shall we say it, anger issues? Yeah .. I don't like being fucked over to my face and I have been known to stand my ground and to end up in front of a judge. In every case I was well within my right to be outraged and often just a tad over the line in terms of response. C'est la fucking vie.

When Monday came the place was locked up and a "out of business" sign on the door. Sure enough the Goodyear in Cobourg Ontario had been picked clean by the owners I guess and then bankrupted. That was why they could not get me tires. Because the assholes were out of business.

So that is why I never darken the door of a Goodyear ever again.

Back on topic .. my Toyota Camry needs tires and I'm fine with spending money for a good safety level. To me, safety is worth every penny.

Okay .. end of my little monologue.

ps: google for "goodyear in Cobourg Ontario" and see : goodyear cobourg ontario
Are you also a victim of the goodyear cobourg ontario?

If you are willing to travel, may i suggest www.buffalonytires.com. I have purchased several sets of tires for my Impala which happens to be the same size as yours. I currently have Yokohama Avid on my car that i have purchased from them. If memory serves me right, they cost roughly 460 USD, out the door.

I think Costco is one of the cheapest places to buy tires. You can order any Michelin/Goodrich/Uniroyal tire from them. Costco puts nitrogen in their tires, which is more stable than air in that it expands less at high speeds. Other tire shops offer nitrogen too. It is a bit of a gimick because air is 78% nitrogen anyway. I do find the tires hold their pressure longer, but NO ONE drives the type of speeds or carrys the loads on public roads where nitrogen is a necessity.

Nitrogen is necessary for Formula 1, Indy, NASCAR and other high performance racing where the speeds are high and pressure stability is necessary. Large airliners and military aircraft also use nitrogen because the pressure remains stable when an ice cold tire touches down at a high speed on a hot surface.

I don't like Goodyears either. Never had a set that satisifed me. Firestone was bought out by Bridgestone and it is the best thing that happened to that company. Firestone is now producing good quality tires. Their Firehawk GTA is far superior to the Goodyear Eagle RS A. Only exposure to Yokohama was on a 91 Acura Integra. Lived up to their reputation back then as being performance tires that were bad in the winter and were fast wearing. I think things are different now.

Not a Pirelli fan. No particular reason. I prefer to stick to tires that can be easily replaced should one be destroyed for any reason.

I'm not too sure I am willing to swallow the marketing for nitrogen filled tires. Somehow the engineering seems weak. Normal air is about 78% nitrogen with another 20% as oxygen. The coefficient of thermal expansion for nitrogen really dominates the overall effect of thermal stability in air with oxygen just as a component. The volume expansion of oxygen and nitrogen can be reasonably calculated with the ideal gas laws and some very basic thermodynamics. I'll do a little math here and get back to you with the numbers but nitrogen filled tires are a marketing gimmic to force you to get service from a dealership. Sorry, and I'll get you the engineering behind it.

Where we *may* see some benefit is from the reduction of rubber oxidization on the internal surfaces under flex and pressure but really that is trivial compared to road wear.

You have me puzzled and I really need to give this some thought.

ps: I have a porsche also and the dealership could care less about nitrogen in the tires.

I bought my Goodyear Assurance tires for my Camry at Bramalea tire on Airport Road and saved a lot and service was great. Tires are good in all weather conditions and are very smooth riding they are the same tires Limos use
