Aussies have always downplayed it interpersonally. A mate from school got bit down melbourne way and used to call the scar on his thigh his "shark hickey". Or if someone expressed surprise that he got bit by a shark he'd correct them and say "nah, he just gave me a bit of a nuzzle".
