First- The owner is a tempermental goofball, so it doesn't surprise me that he does something like this, because the pressure is on him.

Second- Look at Detroit in the early 90's they had the skill, but their coach (Murray) just couldn't get the team over the hump. It doesn't mean that the coach is no good, Martin developed good players into a great team, but this team does need someone different like a Scott Bowman, who can take them to the next level.

Scotty looks like he is comfortable in retirement and begs the obvious question of who will replace Martin. Anybody have any thoughts on this? I hear Larry Robinson.

Although he has one mean ass attitude. He has the temper and emotion that people in Ottawa said Martin lacked.

and he's been dead for 73 years...

But he sure did know how to make people go out there and win one for the Gipper. Whoever in the name of holy hell that was.

Nobody should really be surprised by this move, or upset by it.
OF COURSE he has to be fired. The team was going nowhere in the playoffs. A team with that level of success in the regular season must eventually start to make noise in the playoffs. They didn't, except last year - and they regressed, this year.
The coach is always fired.
Like it or not, fair or not, that's hockey - as they said, you can't get rid of thirty guys.

Although, I'm sure if they tried .......... ;)

In a day and age where fielding a winning hockey team is important to ticket sales, marketing and profitability I think that Martin has more than held up his end of the bargain.

He is an excellent coach.

If the playoffs are the only measuring stick then check him last year. His Sens did great.

The playoffs are won and lost with goaltending year after recent year. Martin coached a great team to a great season with a good palyoff performance. I personally don't see him as culpable.

Dump Bonk, take the C from Alfie, buy a real goalie, win some 2nd and 3rd line faceoffs and you still MIGHT have a shot at the Cup.

It's that hard to win. Too bad a good coach and a good man had to take the fall. He will land a job soon enough.
