The finalists came out...there's an important award, Best Defensive Forward...Who gives a fuck about it...it's just an award they invented so Bob Gainey could win an individual award...they should call it the Gainey Trophy, give it to him and never have it again...

Barkov, Bergeron, Lindholm named as Selke Trophy finalists

The Calgary Flames' Elias Lindholm joined fellow centres Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers and Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins as one of three finalists named for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, the NHL announced Tuesday.

They lost game seven 2-1...defensive hockey wasn't the issue, the Tampa goalie was.

You realize that there was more than just game seven right?

And they failed to protect several leads in those games

There were no intra game lead changes the first 4 games. In game 5 Leafs came back from behind so it was TB that lost the lead. Game 7 Leafs never had the lead. Game 6 was the only game where they lost the lead and that was on a 2 men down with 2 high sticking penalties. In that game TB had a 2 goal lead which they lost. Game 7 TB also lost the lead. So in the series TB lost the lead 3 times and Leafs lost the lead only once.
Recap: In the entire series Leafs lost the lead only once and that was when they were 2 men down. According to Webster once is not several.

Whether an award is highly valued or seen as a complete waste of time is generally related to whether a Maple Leaf player is nominated.

The media feeds the attitude.

When Kirill Kaprizov won the Calder as a 24 year old last year, TSN ran an article stating this was an outrage - he wasn't really a rookie because he was too old, had played in the KHL, etc. Basically TSN argued the criteria had to be revamped.

This year Michael Bunting is nominated for the Calder - 26 year old Michael Bunting who was brought in and out of the NHL for four years with the Coyotes - and the same TSN is writing adoringly about how deserving our rookie Bunting is of this award.

No argument... but Toronto suddenly cares about the Calder, and as the O.P. states: "who gives a fuck" about the Selke. There's no Leaf involved.

The Norris is for the best defenseman, not the top scoring defenseman. Only once in the last 5 years has the top scoring defensman won the Norris.

Couple things...the creation of the Selke trophy has nothing to with Maple Leafs, it was created so Bob Gainey could win it...I don't hear a lot of support for Bunting to win the Calder, I hear a lot of support for the Detroit defenceman Seider.
