He requested a trade to be closer to home. He was one of the few bright spots this year. Sorry to see him go.

In true Jay fashion, they picked up Encarnacion to play 3rd. He's hitting .209

this team is becoming a joke. the ownership is a joke with non-winning objectives. i have offically stopped caring about them.

Well trading Rolen last year would have been a mircle but he got healthy for awhile and somebody took that 12 million dollar salary ..

Not quite.

The Blue Jays are helping cover his salary for the rest of this year. Cincinnati is on the hook for $11,000,000 for next year though.

According to Richard Griffin:
(Toronto Star)

The prized acquisition is not Encarnacion, who will be hard-pressed to beat out Jose Bautista for playing time.

The two bigger prizes are (Josh) Roenicke and (Zach) Stewart, a pair of hard-throwing relievers. Roenicke, who pitched for the Reds at the Rogers Centre in June, will report to the major-league Jays today.

"We got two really good arms that we liked for a long time," Ricciardi said. "Roenicke is a guy that's going to fit in really good in our bullpen. We control him for a while. Stewart's a guy we loved in the ('08) draft. We loved him this year and he fits in nicely with the Cecils and the Romeros and the Rzepczynskis and the Marcums and the young guys we have pitching behind Doc."

Roenicke, 26, the son of former major-league outfielder Gary Roenicke, made 11 major-league appearances this year with a 2.70 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. He's 0-2 lifetime in the majors with a 3.86 ERA. He was a 10th round selection in the June 2006 draft.

Stewart, 22, rose through three levels of the Reds' system this year, combining for a 4-1 record and a 1.67 ERA in 23 games. He was a third-round draft choice in June '08.

Encarnacion, 26, missed significant time this year with a chip fracture of the left wrist. He is hitting .209 overall in 43 games, but .289 with three homers since the all-star break. He is signed through 2010, earning $4.75 million (all figure U.S.) next year

Rolen is a bit of an odd guy I get the feeling. He has wanted a divorce from all three MLB teams he has played for.

He became unhappy in Philadelphia and asked to be traded so he was sent to the Cardinals.

In St. Louis he became disenchanted and asked to be traded so he was sent to Toronto.

In Toronto, he became unhappy because some personal situation wasn't right for him so he asked to be traded and is sent to Cincinnati.

No matter where he goes he becomes unhappy with the situation so I get the feeling he will become disenchanted with Reds also and go somewhere else once he becomes a free agent after 2010.

Encarnacion led the team in errors last season with 23, and missed two months of this season with a chipped bone in his left wrist.

Encarnacion is batting .209 with five homers and 16 RBIs. He'll make $4.75 million in 2010, the final year of his contract.

sounds like Vernon Wells is going to meet his twin brother

LMAO. Rios must be at least a first cousin.

The reason I respect Rolen as a player: He's making big money, AND playing well. Can't say that for many Jays.

The Mgt. is almost as bad as MLSE Mgt. but the ACC is always a sellout can't say that about the RC aka as the cave.

Baseball will always be an American pastime. To be honest with you, i think it is less popular in Canada than soccer or basketball. When the Jays do well, you will see people at the parks but if they don't, there are better things to do in the summer.

The Skydome is well past its time. Perhaps a new, open-air, natural grass downtown stadium will put some more bums in the seat but if the team remains non-competitive, there's only so much you can do.

you can look at this in two ways... first... last year if you were asked if you would make this trade you probably would.. second encanacion is not the centerpiece to this deal... you were not gonna get drabek for rolen so be happy that you got a pair of good young pitchers one who is rising rapidly through the system and may even make a start or two this year... and if encanacion plays well next year JP is gonna look like a genius as far as i am concerned he is just a throw in to help eleviate some financial problems with aquiring rolen straight up

I spoke to people who saw Brooks Robinson play real time and I have seen videos of him playing 3rd base and he is probably the best defensive 3rd baseman in our lifetime.

I agree with most of this except the 2010 comment. He's just about ready to stick a fork into, he'll be lucky to find a taker then.

You couldn't say that for Rolen until this year ........and he was playing his way out of town.

I'm gonna miss Rolen, but, he asked to be closer to home. the jays have to cut costs anyways. they got good pitching prospects and who knows about Encarnacion - young enough to not officially be a write off.

i think it was a great trade though. we could have a closer and a young middle SP next year.

Rolen was sold high.

Agreed. Bullpen in particular needed strengthening.
