Scanning one valuable photo.

I have a printed photo in high resolution that I ordered from a website that will not sell the digital file itself (which is 4000x6000). So I took a photo of the photo with my 24 megapixel camera, and the result is not as good as I had hoped (it is not as sharp and light reflection seems unavoidable). I scanned it with my scanner at 600 dpi (though the scanner is about 10 years old the software is the latest version), and the image is a bit better but I know it is not as good as the original digital image. So what are my options now? Will a new scanner (and a photo scanner in particular) give an image as good as the original? Should I go to a professional photo scanning service in Toronto? I only have this one photo I want to digitalize.

You could buy a new scanner, but why bother when you could easily bring it Staples where they have copiers and scanners. Did you print this photo from your PC? If so, there should be a digital file (JPG) on your hard drive somewhere.

No. I choose the photo from their website and they print it (in its original resolution) and mail it to me. They won't sell the digital image itself.

As far as I know, Staples doesn't offer scanning services.

TPL Reference Library used to have a Digital Media Services department (not sure if that's the exact name) where you could scan photos and such. I used it many years ago, so I don't know if it still exists. Just a thought, though.

Yes, they do have scanners in the stores or at least the ones that I've been to. Technically speaking, a photocopier is also a scanner. Not sure how the quality is like, but it's worth a shot. According to this, they can scan up to 11" X 17"

Call your closest store and find out.

Hmmm.... Nice find then. I'll give it a go tomorrow. They apparently use a printer scanner instead of a photo scanner, but its worth a try.

Just curious what you want to use the digitized file for/

Don't bother with Staples or Kinkos for ultra high rez. They are office grade

If it is really that important to you, then here is a company that fine artists use to digitize their artwork in the the highest resolution and to ensure correct colour and colour balancing.

If you have photoshop or Corel Draw you can tune your photo by adjusting the brightness, contrast, highlights and shadows. then adjust the temperature, tint and saturation. I find that after you do this if you go back to the brightness and do a second adjustment the pic comes out much better. Some of these programs have auto sharp features. Corel use to offer a 30 day free trial of Corel Draw, check to see if this is still available. In windows 10 there is a simple photo adjustment program you can use.

I think you might find that most pro scanning services will have issues with what is likely an obvious copyright infringement. I can recommend two shops that I have used for photographic work and they both do excellent work. At the foot of the DVP, try Colourgenics (http://colourgenics.com/?category/Home) or in Oakville, Art Printing Studio (http://www.artprinting.ca/).

Both will make you sign a document that says you have ownership of the piece. If there's any "©" markers on it, they'll likely refuse to do it as it could land them in legal problems.

When Black's was still open they said they could make digital copies of prints.

My friend has a home thing that make digital copies of some of my slides.

Thanks for the assistance guys. I emailed colourgenics whether they will take on such a small project or not, else I will go to staples and accept office quality.

Good to know about colourgenics, thanks.

You do this on purpose, don't you. Trying to make people think you are stupid by channeling Ricky from Trailer Park boys. But in reality, no one could really be that dense, could you?

Both him and Ceiling Cat.

Always using any excuse to pipe up how smart they think they are and yet what they are yipping about has no use to the OP or his question.

Seriously Skyrider... Blacks? A company long out of business digitizing 35mm slides ? What does that have to do with the OP's question of scanning a large print?

And Cat? How can the guy uses Corel or anything if he cannot get a good digital file to begin with?

Sometimes it is better to not say anything and let people think you are stupid, than saying something and removing any doubt!

The problem is when people are stupid, they don't even know it and can't see how other people see them. As I said about Rockslinger, no one can be as dense as he pretends to be, it must be an act just to get views and responses.

Oh, and cue the "cackling dead" etc. from you know who... I try not to respond to his posts because he has a serious persecution complex, and is another who can't see himself as others do.

My friend digitized the slides not Black's (read my post again). The point is that there should be professional photo stores capable of digitizing prints. Here is one example: http://www.rapidphoto.ca/scanning.html

I added slides to the discussion in case there are members who also want to digitize their slides.
