I'm looking to buy a scanner.

Recommnedations for model and store (in Toronto, not online) are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Since Toronto police and fire use truncked talkgroups on a Motorola Type II SmartZone system you at least need an analog trunktracking scanner like the Pro 94 (around $200-400). But if Toronto has plans to go digital you will need something like a Uniden BCD996T or the smaller hand held version. Cost about $600-$800.

I'm thinking of getting the Canon 4400F
excellent choice.

Canon is supposed to be the best in this area. I used to have the 3000ex before I went to an all-in-one (for the space and the fact that I needed to scan several pages at a time).

These scanners are CCD, USB2 (must have) and come with a very nice softwares package. The canon driver is nice as you can program and customize functions accessible from the buttons.
I found that the 3000 was a bit noisy, but I guess the 4400 is much higher quality.
Speaking of which, the scanning resolution is just amazing on this one! you can actually scan negatives with that resolution!

Anyhow I think it's a smart buy if you are not afraid of the space it takes (let's say compared to an all-in-one or the LiDE scanners).
