but why would he want to lower his internet speed.

He might be confused.

The only requirement for Magic Jack is a high speed connection. They do not mandate a speed

I just switched from Verizon DSL to Time Warner cable. I now get better quality for a lower price and cable TV which I didn't have with Verizon. But if I went with this Magic Jack, unless I'm missing something, in order to save any money I would have to redo my plan with Time Warner to lower cost by excluding their phone service in the revised plan. Would someone please comment on this?

Yes. Unless you want to keep paying TW.

The plan TWC offers without the phone is around 100 a month. This includes digital cable with one box, no premimums such as HBO or alike and includes the internet. That is the plan I am on.

I have one and it works just fine. Only you cannot get a local area code number so not good for local people calling you... they will have to dial long distance.

Bought mine locally btw ... http://techdirectcanada.ca/flyer/

(you don`t need to mail order on internet)

Paid $39plus taxes... and that includes one yr of service. Can re-new on-line after that.

As someone already mention there are couple reviews etc in the tech section:

I also have a Magic Jack. Even if you sign-up with a Canadian address you can only pick from US numbers. I chose a Florida number as that is where my Dad lives and it makes it easier on everyone. I highly reccommend it. I also gave one to my SO as we are currently doing the over-seas-long-distance thing and it is a God-sent.

Mind you, if you and your friends get Skype you can do face-to-face video calls for free world wide provided both user have a computer and internet connection. Skype is my #1 choice.

If you have an American telphone number, how do you recieve phone calls? Do people have to call you long distance in the same city?

I usually phone people. Albeit, I don't use my Magic Jack as a substitute for a phone, period. I use my mobile for local calls and I call long distance with my Magic Jack. They do not get charged for incoming calls. At least none of the 2-dozen or so people I have called have been charged for this.

However, I am not sure if mobile phones get long distance charges. I am going to say yes as any chance for the Teleco's to raise their ARPU, you know they are going to take it, especially because the call is "coming" from the states.

As for people calling you...a phone card maybe? Haha, sorry, I know that isn't helpful!

The short answer is yes.

There are different ways around that though. Just have people call your cell... answer... then call them back... outgoing local calls are free.

Or have a local service land-line separate. Then only use majicJack for long distance calls. If you are making enough long distance calls, you'll still save $$ in long run.

Thanks for the responses, papa and hunter. This is a one year special I have and it costs me around 80 a month. The cable, however, is very basic, only 22 stations reflecting the fact that I hardly ever watch TV. I really like the free long distance USA and Canada.
