Satellite Internet?

Morgan Ellis

Bitchy McBitcherson
I'm moving up to the middle of no-whereville in the very near future, and have just learned that the only form of high speed internet available there is satellite internet.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with it? Cost? DL/UL speeds? Issues? Reviews of providers?

The more info, the better. I never for a moment thought I'd ever have to think about going back on m*ther f*cking dial up..

Stressed,

Morgan

It usually costs more then high speed and it depends on were you are how well it works from what i see the DL is faster then Cable or high speed but the UL can be slow I have been in some areas were it doesn't work well and bumps on and off . there is a cell phone from telus that works well high speed almost anywere and you can hook it up to a PC or laptop $100 month plus phone service unlimited. It is a bit more but works well

Morgan,
I also live "nowhere" but we do have cable internet service. There is not a dial up requirement for my service here.

Satellite Internet may require dial up for uploading

I'm moving reallyreallyreally into the middle of nowhere. Nowhere as in "I can't even get DSL no where". Nowhere as in my neighbour told me he had to fight to get a private phone line and not a party line. Nowhere as in I have Mennonites living down the street - the kind with buggies and bonnets.

Trust me, there's no cable up here. I'm somewhat surprised there's even electricity...

Cable requiring Dial Up? Nah....I wouldn;t recommend satelite internet at all, overpriced, and not much faster than dial up (if at all).
Do you know any verified DL/UL speeds for satellite internet? That would be seriously helpful..

Wireless internet as opposed to satellite

I posted a similar issue a couple of months ago, and someone offered the following suggestion...

Portable High Speed Internet Connections

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An alternative might be the "unplugged" internet services from rogers and bell:

Rogers has a high speed internet connection that works on their wireless network.

http://www.shoprogers.com/Store/Cabl...t/portable.asp

Bell offers something similar called Sympatico Unplugged ...

http://bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpPromo_Int_Unplugged.page

Basically plug these into the power outlet and then into your laptop and you have your portable high speed internet connection.

I don't really want to post my new area, but suffice to say that I'm about 40 mins. from the Nottawasaga Inn. For the readers amongst you, I'm moving to what's sometimes called 'Alice Munroe country'. Yeah, that kind of nowhere. On the plus side, I can get cell phone coverage up there. I think I have to get a hand cranked one, tho'...No kidding, either - my closest grocery store has horse and buggy parking behind it!

Don't even joke about the brethren - Mennonites are hawt. I'm seriously thinking of ditching my mormon fetish for them. Mmmm, men with beards. And buggies.

:D

Correct.
Unless you have a multi-million dollar earth to satellite transmitter on your roof.

There is 2-way satellite:
http://www.remotesat.com/packages.htm

The base station is about 1K$. From the installation I saw, it seems not too bad. This particular dish looked like it had a aiming problem and had some packet loss. HTTP was great but HTTPS and IPSEC were really slow.

I'd stay away from the hybrid combos (sat download, phone dial-up upload). I had a friend on the old ExpressVu Internet system and it wasn't too bad for web browsing only. It costs almost as much as the 2-way system. For the little cost difference, I'd go 2-way.

It's nice to know that Canada is still a backwards country .I've moved to the middle of the Carribean, and we have modern internet services, and telephone. Guess it doesn't matter where you live, just what country.

Hey Morgan, in addition to my PM'd comments, don't forget to also check out Rogers with a Sierra Wireless card. Within a year or so the HSDPA network will extend quite a bit further than what it's at now. It's possible that your new area might be covered soon.

HSDPA surfing is actually pretty good. Again, it's not ultra high speed but it's quite acceptable.

Its not a good thing, I have used it. It is expenive a pain to set up or at least the technicial beeen there 2-3 time to set it up. When it does work and the connection is clear on normal speed we were pulling 40-60kb down with the business connection i found that it is a little bit better but its expensive was paying 4and change plus tax for it, i find the wireless air card better cause i travel more similar to it but needs a cell connection for it to work
