Hi,

I'm aware that lots of people have these semi-legal Satellites that can receive PPV for free. From a few casual conversations I've had, the equipment and technologies involved seem a bit confusing. What exactly do I need, and how much will it cost? I've also heard that it may not last for more than a year before I'd need to upgrade.

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it. Really, I just want to watch the UFC and Pride PPV events which seem to be every month now, and is costing quite a bit at $40 a pop.

Here you go...

$180 for the receiver, you may need one two or three dishes depending on what you want, plus the cabling and installer. Suko will install 14168794796 he has charged me about $50.00 to $125.00 depending on how many dishes he puts up. Suggest a Coolsat 5000 or 6000 or Viewsat Extreme they have the best support. Join www.ultimatetesters.com or www.dssrookie.com for help you will need to do a lot of reading but the files to download are readily available. Read the rules on the sites before you post for help...these sat pirates mods, I mean "testers" can get very testy if you do not follow their rules. Generally, we have been up, uniterrupted for years except for one dark period last year that lasted 1-3 months depending on your model. Viewsat was the first up with an uncarded system. Coolsat has the option to add a card if needed. Buy the receiver from HU Shack 416-890-5494, cheapest in town or just google it lots of guys out there.

Program Guide

Kooley, my Viewsat Extreme has an excellent guide, you can sort by movies, news, adult etc It does it all by itself without adding favourites. I just bring my lap top anyways and go the the Dish site when I want to see what's on.

The carded system is a mystery to me huge learning curve I think but FTA is not basic stuff either I guess. I have used 5 different FTA boxes in the last 4-5 years and all of them are still up at different places.

Don't ever forget that "pirate TV" is not "free TV". You will always be putting some money in to keep the things going. That's OK as long as you think you are getting value from doing this compared to actually subscribing.

If you don't already have the pirate capable equipment, the best thing to get is a "Free to Air" receiver or FTA. These are 100% legal to buy and own. They get reprogrammed via your PC to get pirate TV.

I think the cheapest places to buy this gear right now is in Mississauga on Matheson, just west of Dixie. There are 3 places in the same area that have cut the prices to bone (AA, RTC and Incredible). A good basic receiver is the CaptiveWorks CW-600P at $88 to $100 cdn that has reasonable guide capability. The Coolsat 5000 at $120 is another really good basic receiver. The Viewsat 2000 Extreme is a little pricey at $170 cdn, but has fantastic support.

Premium grade receivers are the Coolsat 6000 ($165 or cheaper) and Viewsat Ultra ($200). The Viewsat Ultra even has a USB port and can be programmed using just a memory stick.

You will also need a dish (20" skewable with two dual LNBs) at abouit $60-$70 dollars.

The only reason to use a real receiver with a hacked card is if you are after US HD programming. FTA receivers cannot get this yet, only Cdn HD programming.

Dishnet has already shown the capability to permanently destroy hacked cards in Dec. 2006. A hacked card is $300cdn not incl the equipment to program it. That's a lot of money to risk. FTA receivers cannot be destroyed by DN or B3V, and can almost always be reprogrammed.

Also FTA receivers can get both DN and B3V at the same time while a real receiver gets only DN or B3V.

Some FTA recievers have the capability to record programming to a USB hard drive for full PVR functionality. The USB drive can then be connected to a PC to burn DVDs. A real receiver cannot do this.

Your review is exellent and honest. I have had a Viewsat for 2 years and not had a problem except for the period you mentioned last year.

Suport for Viewsat is the best and i should upgrade to a Viewsat Ultra soon to make it real easy.

Thanx for a great post

Thanks, a lot guys, but f**k, it's getting complicated!

Ok, to summarize, I need:

1. Viewsat Extreme receiver, $180

2. One or more satellites 50-$125 including installation

3. I have to go to a web site to get the program schedule.
Once I've decided what channels I want to watch, will the channel # stay the same?

4. I need to do some setup/configuration with the recevier from info I can get from the recevier vendor.

A few more questions:

All I want is PPV so I can watch UFC and Pride. Can you receive these?

Can you record them with a VCR?

Right now I have Rogers cable. Will the new receiver co-exist with it?

Or can it replace it?

Can you get all the Rogers cable channels with the new receiver?

So is this legal or not?

Check this link http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/whats_on_dish/pay_per_view/sports/mma/index.shtml

Is it legal? Depends what you are watching. You cannot program or watch a device to see PPV that you would normally have to pay for with a Canadian provider. If you cannot get the program in Canada but a US company is beaming it to you and you cannot become a subscriber for the US company, it becomes a grey area of the law that is still not clear. If a Canadian company has it and you want it for free, your box is illegal but don't expect the LE to come barging through your door today....or ever.

You can record with a VCR or just about anything

Fta????

Wow this is great thread!

I am pretty much in the same boat as Punter an FTA NEWB. I have some understanding of the DN/B3V type of setups (had one setup for B3V this hasn't worked in over 2 years or since they switched cards so im told) I was wondering if I could get an FTA box that would work with my existing dish? I too like Punter like the UFC and Pride FC (not the gay channel:eek: ) events. I also like the ability that someone mentioned with respect to being able to record events on an external usb drive.

I have tried the trditional DSS FTA forums but they are like communists when it comes to what you can and cannot ask not to mention learing the abbreviations.

Any help in lamens terms would be great

Thanks in advance

The CW600P/CW-100R will record to an external USB hard drive. The CW-100R ($150 cdn?) could be used with any FTA receiver, but it integrates well with the CW600P ($100cdn).

Sonicview4000 ($400 cdn) also uses a USB hard drive or The Viewsat 7000 uses a removeable IDE drive ($400). Both have dual tuners so you can record something else while you another channel.

You will have to program it first.

It's not like it's ready to go once you take it out of the box.

Some programming required, although relatively simple when you read the instructions.

Then hook it up and you are good to go.
