Its all a myth
Quote from Phil Collins:
Phil said: "When someone says, 'Now, tell me Phil, what is it really about?', I say I don't know. I have no idea because I made it up as I went along ... I didn't know what I was singing about. I mean obviously, when you're going through a divorce, all kinds of things run through your mind. There's anger, there's bitterness, there's hurt, you know. And all that stuff is in In The Air Tonight. Menace, you know. Finally losing your temper at the end when the drums come in."
wow really, i had no idea... okay. scratch that song from my list.

The Big Smoke
I would have to add "The Dance" by Garth Brooks to the many great songs on this list.

I am not a country music fan at all, but this song played at a baseball player friend of mine's funeral in 1993 just as he was about to become an all-star.

The song lyrics coupled with the image I have of a 28 year old who lost his life and young family haunts me forever (not to mention the other young player who passed in the same accident).

elysium
Atmosphere by Joy Division. Lead singer, Ian Curtis commited suicide shortly after. Hypnotic, haunting, apparently it was his "call for help" before killing himself.

Joy Division was one of the late 70's/early 80's most influential bands. Became New Order shortly after.

Still get chills every time I hear it.
