Russell Peters is a funny comic but he's not on Bill Burr or Doug Stanhope's level. What he does really well is nitpick ethnic eccentricities.

He's done himself a disservice by moving to LA entirely. He's still deriving a large part of his income from Canada. Jim Carrey has property in the city, while Rachel McAdams lives here exclusively. Not to mention the growing number of foreign entertainers who have property here, foremost among them is Guillermo Del Toro. Interesting trivia, Rachel McAdams neighbourhood is the focal point of The Handmaid's Tale.

Peters has some good bits.

I will admit that I like Peters. I get a kick out of his impression of his mother saying to him, "Russell, you're getting older" and the like. (The Indians in the audience positively laugh their heads off at that one.) Also love his stories about going to the Pacific Mall and haggling with a Chinese guy for 50 cents.

But the larger issue is that of comedy in the age of the woke / Social Justice Warrior mentality where everything that guys like Peters do, or Chris Rock does, or the like is targeted for censorship. The so called cancel culture. We clearly saw this (in my opinion) in the case of Louis CK. The guy jerked off in front of a couple of women who consented to watch him blow a load by his own hand and yet the howls of outrage in the metoo culture drove the guy out of business. Sorry, I don't agree. They were grown women who consented to watch a grown man jerk off. They made a decision, live with the consequences. End of story. I don't buy the "he was in a position of authority". Fuck that, put your big girl pants on and say "not interested" and walk out. I really doubt that Louis CK would care.

It seems to me that more and more we are living in the most up fucking tight era I can remember over the course of my entire life. More and more it seems like snowflakes are crying about this being offensive or that being racist, or misogynistic, etc. etc. It used to be that liberals would protest against censorship. Now, it's the exact opposite. Liberals are the worst proponents in favour of censorship. It boggles my mind. We live in a time that more and more would make the Victorians proud.

I truly believe in freedom of speech and self censorship. It's really easy, if you don't like it, don't watch it, don't go, don't listen. But fuck you and the horse you rode in on if you want to make it your mission in life to shut a comedian like Peters or Rock et al down.
What an excellent summation my friend. Especially the part about Louis CK pulling out his cock. Looking back on my life, I'm still kicking myself for not being more aggressive with the women I met. Not that I didn't do okay, but I remember on several occasions, it took my date to say, "are you ever going to take my clothes off?" I'm not saying I should've pulled out my cock on the first date, but playing nice gets you nowhere. Many women are waiting for men to make a move. If you make the first move and the woman says no, then that's that, move on.

But we have no idea what the vibe was leading up to, or in the room with Louis CK. He could've been a complete d-bag and simply pulled out his cock and said "watch me jerk off bitch." Or they could've been flirting and one thing lead to another. I didn't read the whole story, so I don't know the whole situation. All I'm saying, is the nuances, things that happen, things that are said. It's never black and white. Maybe what he did was wrong, but from what I understand, he didn't force anyone to do anything.

I look at it this way. Say I went on blind date, only to find out she was less than attractive, and not even close to my type. But then we ended up back at her place for a drink. If she suddenly lifted up her skirt and started fingering her pussy in front of me, I would simply make the decision to leave. End of story. Not, I'm going to file charges. WTF is wrong with people. We're adults here!

For the record, I ended up fucking one of those "less than attractive" blind dates. Probably because she fed me a few beers, then pulled down her pants and started rubbing her pussy. True story. lol

I am definitely not a snowflake when it comes to jokes about ethnicities especially when, as you mentioned, it has a good delivery. I think I posted a Newfie joke in the thread.

My only point is that, even if it is a well-intentioned compliment, such as Asians are smart and hard-working, is by definition a racist comment. That person is making a generalized statement/assumption attributing specific qualities to a whole race based on nothing other than the race itself. It is stereotyping. It is the very definition of a racist comment.

Wikipedia: Racism is the belief that groups of humans possess different behavioral traits corresponding to physical appearance and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another.

Merriam Webster:

Definition of racism
a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

Using the example above, I am not claiming that somebody who says that Asians are smart and hard working, has any prejudice against Asians and has no malintent. They are probably admiring of Asians. But ascribing certain qualities (whether positive or not) to a person or people because they are a certain race, is a racist comment that meets the criteria of those definitions. And when somebody says something complimentary about a race, there is no shame in admitting that it can be interpreted as racist as it is clear that there is no malice or hate or ill will is intended.

My point is based on facts (an accepted definition) and applying those facts to arrive at a logical end point.
Then don't listen.

No problem with you voting with your wallet or your feet or both.

Big problem when you start to make it your mission in life to create a shit storm to shut a guy down because you choose not to like something and want to force your opinions on others. The media just loves cancel culture stories these days. I can't imagine a movie like Blazing Saddles being made today, or a show like All in the Family, or guys like Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack even being allowed to exist.

I'm not a fan of John Wayne for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which he was a shitty actor. (Though he was pretty good as Rooster Cockburn I admit.) And the guy was an abject biggot. But I wouldn't make it my mission in life to shut him down. Not then and not now. As far as I'm aware, John Wayne never hurt anyone.

John Wayne was a draft dodger, and your link doesn't work.
Deleted link. Anyway I was being ironic. Sands of Iwo jima and all those great movies he made during the war. While other people were actually doing the fighting. Frank Sinatra also made a lot of great war movies starring himself. He did sell war bonds along with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby though. A couple more draft dodgers. So that's a war effort of sorts. After a hard day of schmoozing, back to the hotel to fuck some bobby soxers

He used to be funny. I watched some of his newer standup and it sucked. And he hasn't aged well, he looks like crap and his mood is bitter. Sad. Good memories of him when I was a kid.
Ya. This is how I feel. He was only able to get away with the race stuff because he isn’t white but he overused it in my opinion.

If he left today, I wouldn’t miss him.

On a side note: Leaside resident Guillermo del Toro is remaking the film-noir classic Nightmare Alley.

It has an all-star cast. With Bradley Cooper as a mind hunter con artist who dupes his victims into willingly giving him their money. Cate Blanchett plays a psychiatrist who could be even more dangerous than he is. Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby - Peaky Blinders) is also in the film.

Sinatra tried to enlist. Several times if I recall.

He was rejected for medical reasons if I recall correctly (Something about a perforated ear drum.)

Plus the guy weighed in at about 120 pounds. Some nazi would have made short work of him and Frank getting killed would have been very bad publicity.

Wayne on the other hand did everything he could to avoid service and apparently felt very ashamed of that fact for the rest of his life. It's ironic that guys like Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable and Henry Fonda all served in WW2 and all were hollywood liberals.

I don't know about Hope (who was British actually) nor Crosby. But Crosby was supposedly a huge prick in real life.

I remember when I was a kid Crosby’s sons would show up on Entertainment Tonight and reveal what a prick he was to them. Can’t recall all the details but pretty sure he didn’t “spare the rod” too often

I have never once thought Peters was funny. Can’t understand his success at all

Part of the terms of him volunteering was that he would be accompanied at all times by a couple of bodyguards.(probably)........
