Like many of us I like to have a drink or three every once in a while. I can drink almost any 'hard liquor', but my preference is rum and Coke. My preferred rum is Bacardi 1873.

I would like opinions of other TERBites on rum.
Which do you like ?
I occasionally like a change, but always end up going back to Bacardi 1873. I find a change for a bottle or two makes me appreciate the Bacardi when I go back, and it is always nice to try other varieties.

Flor de Cana, Ron Zaccapo, Mount Gay are a few good ones, especially the later vintages if you like it a little sweeter.

I am not an expert drinker, but I have enjoyed a rum and Coke or Gin and 7up on occasion. If it is a mixed drink, I would think a moderately priced clear rum is best. More importantly in a mixed drink it is the quality of ice and temperature of the drink that makes a big difference. Store bought ice is made with distilled water and has no air bubbles in it. Starting with a chilled Coke makes a big difference because a warm Coke has to cool down to the right temperature for the drink to taste its best. I have had high quality, high priced dark rums. These
are best had without mix with ice, or maybe just a splash. I was also told that the lower priced dark rums are just white rums darkened with caramel. ( Caramel - crap left over from manufacture of sugar. Sugar cane is used to make rum )

Captain Morgan spiced rum goes well with coffee or tea on cold winter days, specially if you are outside :)

I like to mix my rum with fruit drinks, such as 5-Alive Tropical, and nothing beats Parrot Bay or Malibu rum for that.

When I used to drink rum, I preferred Appleton. I had a friend bring me a bottle of barbancourt (sp?) from the carribean quite a few years ago and it was incredible. Don't care much at all for white rum.

If mixing, save your $ and don't spend more than the Bacardi you are drinking. IMO even that is a waste.

If sipping try above, Or angostura 1919, Eldorado 15 or 21.

My Gay Black....100 proof and so smooth.
Any good rum should be enjoyed on its own or over ice. If you go to Barbados and stop in @ one of the roadside rum shacks you will see these weathered old men just sipping their rum str8...the best way to savour. Coke / mix = pollution....plus the carbonation will get you hammered faster.

Try Gosling's Black seal Bermuda Black rum, can of coarse only get 80 proof here thanks to our overlords, but if your down in the states pick up the overproof, either way its a good tasting rum mixed or straight up.

My tastes run to Capt. Morgan's Dark and Special Reserve as well as Pusser's once and awhile. Sometimes with Coke, sometimes straight up depending on what I'm hankering for.

I only enjoy spirits straight or with a bit of water (not rum). I find many of them are sweet already. Best rum I found in recent years is Gossling Red seal rum. It has a seal on the bottle. It sells for about $35 for a 40 oz. I believe it is from Bermuda.

I dislike the taste of liquor so much, but recently have picked up some rums. I am in BC so I am not sure of the selection that is available in Ontario.

I prefer the Appleton's 12 year- may be wrong on the aged, and a Bacardi special limited edition corked that came out this year in the black case. If you are willing to spend an extra 15-20 on enjoying your liquor and not being able to taste it, I recommend spending a bit more money on something that has been aged.
